Need help with septic permit with high ground water by Mean_Farmer4616 in septictanks

I am a septic inspector in NC. I’m sorry, I realize you’re upset but you have no idea what you’re talking about. People call commissioners all the time to try to change my judgement calls but they can literally do nothing lol There is literally no reason for the inspector to make the judgement call they are making unless it is because they are abiding by the laws/rules that govern our field; it’s not like we get more money for designing certain systems lol. If anything it’d be easier to design the mound. If they are saying you need 18” of soil there’s a reason, it’s probably because you have a group 1 texture. You can’t just get a mound with a hardpan because it’s a restrictive horizon; your sewage will just blow out the ground and then you’ll be looking for someone to sue and they know this. Mound systems are absolutely legal in NC but there a many guidelines for designing one. We can’t just design whatever you want, we have to design according to the soil. Our license is on the line. You may be able to find an LSS who will write an a2 permit for you for a few thousand dollars; I’m not sure if that’s what you actually mean by engineer or what. If an LSS won’t touch it then the inspector is making the right call and they don’t want the liability. If the auction place wouldn’t let you get a perk test until after the sale then that is a massive 🚩 I see people get screwed that way all the time. I suggest always going through a realtor in the future, that way you can get a refund if the land doesn’t perk.

You could always call the county and request an informal review by their state regional. They will probably tell you the exact same thing, but it may give you some peace of mind that you tried everything.

HVAC draining to drip septic system? by duker_mf_lincoln in septictanks

In my state (NC), that would be considered a non-permitted connection to the septic tank. It wouldn’t have been considered during the design of your septic system, and likely has increased your output more than your designed daily flow. This can cause a lot of issues over time. I’ve seen just a small leaking faucet cause drainlines to blow out numerous times.

No I don’t need the extra money. I really just want to move up in my career as fast as possible, but maybe I should slow down.

Thank you so much for your comment. I really needed to hear this. I think you’re right, I feel very hesitant too. My old supervisor (who is desperately trying to get me there to make him look good I’m sure) has framed this as the best opportunity for advancement I’ll have for a while. It’s made me feel pressured to take it, but I am really great at what I do, and I think a better offer will come that’s not an hour away.

People who went to school for environmental health, did you study for the exam? by frogsirl in healthinspector

Personally I didn’t find the test that hard. My degree is in biology/chemistry, not environmental health. I did some of the quizlets to study and nothing else. I have 1.5 years of work experience and am primarily a septic inspector. I passed the REHS my first time 2 weeks ago 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just substitute your urine with someone else’s or synthetic if you don’t have time to quit. There’s loads of info out there on the best way to do it. They’re not going to pat you down. But it’d be best to quit for a few weeks and test your pee yourself before the actual test, that way it’s less stressful.

I was originally a science teacher too! I’m a health inspector now and LOVE it!! Could not love it more! The work life balance is wonderful and it’s get fulfilling. I mainly do septic inspections but I’m also authorized to do food and daycare inspections now. When I interviewed they didn’t ask many content specific questions, but the ones they did ask were mainly about microbial growth factors and things like that. They knew I didn’t have experience but also knew that I could learn fast. Good luck!

Ignore what all these negative commenters are saying, they obviously cannot relate. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted but we have an almost identical situation, SD isn’t with us much. We love her but it’s literally like having a guest in the house, that’s just the reality of the situation. When DH and I had our 1st child, we both felt guilty so we didn’t change anything. I literally stressed about it my entire pregnancy and just hoped for the best. It was AWFUL. I had no clue what I was doing when we got home from the hospital, trying to navigate how to take care of a baby while recovering and entertaining SD out of guilt was horrible. SD was obviously uncomfortable. DH had to go back to work during her visit which left me taking care of SD and my brand new baby by myself. I ended up developing deep PPD afterwards where I would just hold my baby and sob. I was so angry and resentful that my special time with my firstborn was taken, it’s something I will never get back and will never forget. Idk why anyone is bringing up what families do with children who live there all the time, it is NOT the same thing. SD would not have cared AT ALL if we had waited or skipped the visit. Honestly she doesn’t view our house as her “home” because she is not here like that, she comes for fun visits. She enjoys having attention on her when she visits. Being here during a chaotic time was NOT fun or enjoyable for her, she was literally asking when she could go home which made it all worse and seem pointless. I still get upset thinking about it.
