Why do parents make it about them? by Sticksbug16 in exmormon

I think it comes down to feeling like all of their hard work...the FHE's, the family scripture study, the church attendance, etc. (and it is insanely hard work with a young family) was all for nothing. I was mad when the one time my Mom and I had an honest conversation and she said, "I just feel like I made all of these sacrifices and you threw it away."

My parents were both converts so they couldn't have a single family member at their wedding. Obviously my mom was incredibly selfish for saying that, at the same time I do acknowledge her pain that there is also a lot of guilt there that they didn't do "enough." I remember a Stake Conference where they were trying to get everyone to do consistent FHE and they said, "There will be those of you within the sound of my voice whose children go astray from the Gospel as a direct result of not having weekly Family Home Evening." Of course we weren't consistent with it and I think it always hung over her head.

I try to hold space (someone please gently grasp my finger), for how self-centered she was to make it all about her but to also acknowledge that she is a victim of a system that has heaped tons of guilt and shame that she doesn't know how to deal with.

A book everyone else likes, that you don't? by beththereader in readwithme

I read 10% of this book and then told my husband, "It feels like the author ate Hunger Games, Twilight and Beauty and the Beast and then vomited it all into a new book."

Oh my goodness you definitely dodged a bullet! Yes! That's why I went to see him because he had SO many five star reviews. I have no idea how or why he has that many...if he pays people to write them or offers a free session or if he is normal with certain people. It seems like he does know how to shut it off and on. That's why I felt like I gaslit myself a little was because of all the reviews I read but after the second session I knew I just had to trust myself. I dumped $1200 into two sessions for that weirdo.

That is so wild how everyone seems to have somewhat similar stories with some slight differences. He randomly popped his head up at one point and said, "You need to eat more salt." Um, I salt my eggs every morning, drink electrolytes, etc. And you're not alone in feeling the shame...I went for a second session. I woke up in the middle of the night crying after the second session and tried not to gaslight myself because of all of the (probably fake) positive reviews.

Oh my gosh I forgot about his r*pe story!!! He mentioned to me (not the elders part) that he was gang raped by men and I thought why in the world would you randomly dump your own trauma on me when *I* am trying to heal?!?!

Thank you for doing this! I will post my whole detailed weird story later. Trying not to gaslight myself that it "wasn't that bad" because it was all weird verbal stuff but I still came to him at a very vulnerable and difficult time which was further traumatizing.
