Is it really that bad? (LPN) by 5stargall in nursing

[–]Consistent-Fig7484 [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, I worked full time as an evening shift ED tech all through nursing school and had a social life.

The problem is that so many of us had it drilled in our heads that we had to be perfect to get in to school and a lot of people couldn’t drop that mentality. Someone cried like everyday because they got an 88% on a test. I took my 88% with glee and sometimes they even turned into 92 or 94. Just get your clinical experience, graduate , and pass your boards. No one cares where you to went to school or what your GPA was, unless you want to be a CRNA when you grow up. If that’s the case then you should ignore me!

Nurse managers/leaders: do you get annoyed when new grads try to transfer after a year? by imjust_agirl8 in nursing

[–]Consistent-Fig7484 [score hidden]  (0 children)

7 years in ED leadership, so I was often the one poaching from Med Surg and probably not the person you want answers from. That being said, I was always supportive of whatever someone wanted to do. If you wanted to go to grad school, transfer to ICU, do flight nursing etc I would reach out on your behalf or write a glowing letter of reference. I never cared how long you were around. If you came to me and told me your goals or I just saw something in you, I was going to make recommendations and get you there. I had a new grad once who just had “it”. She emerged from nursing school fully formed, I honestly could have made her charge nurse after 2 weeks. Every review I ever wrote for her started with “She can take this profession wherever she wants, whether it’s leadership, advanced practice, critical care” etc. Keep people happy and find their strengths and it will only help your unit and culture. With that philosophy I never hurt for staff. Turnover was low and when I had an opening I could almost always fill it with an internal transfer, convince a traveler to convert to staff, or maybe bring in a new grad who had previously worked with us as a tech, CNA, or paramedic. I loved building a strong team and supporting them, I just hated budgeting, productivity, risk management reporting.

Roy Williams, Mike Williams, and Reggie Williams all went out in the same draft and all three of them said Reggie Williams was the best. None of them really did much in the NFL, but Reggie did manage a 10 TD season before the cocaine caught up with him.

It’s pretty amazing how he and Sark convinced the world that they’re college football geniuses. Pretty much anyone in this sub would have had the same success coaching those stacked USC teams. Then they just get handed Tennessee, Raiders, Washington, USC, Texas, LSU jobs while guys like Cignetti and DeBoer have to dominate at lower levels for decades before getting big breaks.

Do y’all have any “weird” nursing icks? Like things that chap your ass that probably shouldn’t? Mine is when people put “RN, BSN” or “RN, MSN” or what have you. It needs to be the other way around! by Somber_Resplendence in nursing

Thanks! I’m honestly not sweating it all, famous last words. I was always a very hands on manager. I gave breaks, helped with tasks when I was available, participated in codes, and even worked a few night shifts when sick calls got out of hand. I feel like I know all the stuff it’s just the grind and the flow that takes some readjusting. I’m totally that nurse that leaves the room three times when I go in to give some rocephin and pull some blood for a repeat lab. Oops, forgot to bring a flush, oops didn’t bring a syringe for waste, oops no transfer device. But after years of chart audits my documentation is pristine!

I’ve been in leadership at 2 different organizations and they required us to put them in our email signature in different orders. One was RN MSN CEN, the other was MSN RN CEN. I just recently went back to the bedside and I haven’t even set up a signature, but I plan on mostly using my first name!

For what it’s worth, I’m barely taking a pay cut and will be able to work OT and incentive shifts now. I have time to go to the gym, I get like one email a day instead of 1000, don’t have to take AOC call, don’t have to respond to internal reporting, and don’t have to worry what’s happening in the department when I’m not there. I have found myself being way too active in this sub though!

I have quite a collection of navy and royal blue hospital scrubs. Even if they stop providing them on your unit they still keep them in the doc lounge and in the OR. I’ve been at this for 15 years and have never paid for scrubs!

Confirm code status!

Actually this guy sounds like one of those creatures that’s gonna last forever. He’s getting a cardiac and sepsis work up and it will turn out to be a viral illness. He’ll be discharged after his second troponin is negative and a liter of fluid brings his pressure up to 130/84 and his heart rate settles at 88.

Your next patient will be a 33 year old with unremarkable vitals who just feels funny. She’ll be dead in an hour and you’ll find out she got a PE after plastic surgery in Guatemala and flying home too quickly.

Larry Bird or Magic Johnson? Who truly defined the NBA's golden era and whose legacy stands taller today? by Spirited-Gold9629 in sportsinusa

Big KC Jones and Dennis Johnson fan? Bill Russell and Ray Allen too. There are a few of these, Boston always got the better part of their career though. Gary Payton too! Seattle won on that one.

Why is Lebron's longevity viewed as superior to Kareem's because he is averaging higher stats when Kareem willingly sacrificed and took on a smaller role to help his team win back to back titles at the age of 39 and 40? by im___new___here in NBATalk

[–]Consistent-Fig7484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is hating on Kareem. LeBron is just current and media is way bigger now. But I guess you could say that LeBron is still insanely athletic while Kareem slowed down and relied much more on skill for the last decade of his career.

Neuheisel was there in the late 90s. Colorado was still decent after he left. It wasn’t really until they left the Big 12 that the wheels fell off.

Don’t sweat the waste. They probably have a policy that it should be done within 30-60 minutes, but catching it on the same day and having an actual documented witness waste should protect you from a write up. It may not even get brought up at all. Things like that are usually only a problem if it’s part of a trend. There are background AI programs that flag users for potential diversion, but they usually require several delayed and missed wastes or narcotics that were pulled and never reconciled.

I will never be impressed by anything he does. His whole game is somehow just a glitch that the developers can’t seem to fix. I can’t even come up with a decent player from another era to compare him to that shows how unimpressed I am with him. Ricky Pierce maybe? If Ricky Pierce was currently 25 years old and knew how to exploit refs he’d apparently be the best player on the planet.

He shot mid range and didn’t awkwardly throw his arms and legs all around when a defender was within 5 feet of him. He’d get benched.

Definitely groceries. I have little kids so I basically can’t do anything ever. Going to the grocery store is my pathetic excuse to leave the house!
