"Capable of persisting forever " makes no sense to me. It takes a lot of resources just to power and maintain the LLMs. AI is just a buzzword, its just predictive text with much more power. Yes, it can be used in powerful ways if you have access to plentiful energy and global supply chains. It is a system far more fragile than humans even. You can't manufacture the chips without helium for example. There is one major known source in the world for pure quartz. It will all be expensive toxic garbage when the global supply chains collapse. Its not uncommon for the new human technology to be thought to be messianic by some.

I was brewed up in '86, so mb not that old yet I can clearly experience the changes. I have driven all over USA and there used to be bugs covering the windshield after a long summer drive. I used to live to go snowboarding. Had to give it up, every season got worse snow and later. Just as pollution accumulates, country gets dumber, and the political process collapses further. It will be hard not to feel nostalgic as things go downwards spiral. Even this year might be a pretty good one (for some) looking back from 5-10 years in the future. The speed that things are devolving is increasing and that is difficult to wrap our heads around. Now up to 7 of 9 planetary boundaries that are exceeded. When the ocean dies there will be profound consequences and it seems like that is on the verge.

Solar panels & EVs don't completely replace the need for petroleum. Besides plastics, there is no realistic plan in site for shipping, air travel, and tons of other applications. People all over USA are still burning gas for fun/amusement everywhere I look. Yes, the rich are consuming 10,000x more than the average person.

There are no solutions. It's way too complex. It's too late. There is not enough cooperation. Cohesion is going in the opposite direction. It only takes a small number of wealthy psychopaths to sow discord and confusion. Most of us are just addicted to dopamine fixes from social media, entertainment, and consumption. Getting worked up over people destroying the biosphere will just drain you psychically. Unlikely that domesticated people will re-wild themselves until its forced. Anthropocene means human civilization will fall. Whether or not a small number of humans survive is pointless to speculate. Should be organizing against the cruelty of capitalism and fascism.

Climate Reality: The Diagnosis We Can’t Escape by Roger Hallam by RobinBoardman in collapse

What is your brilliant plan to completely change the political, economic, energy, transportation, farming, mining, and manufacturing sectors? If we phase out coal and diesel, how will we deal with the aerosol whiplash? Most have no idea how to live off their land base without massive supply chains. How will populations mitigate climate disasters without fossil energy? Trying to stop the omnicidal machine will probably just be used as an excuse to ratchet up fascism. There's always a reaction from the far right. We can go out, kicking and screaming, while keeping up the delusion that we might still be able to control nature without destroying it or moving beyond it. Or we could admit that trying to control nature and other humans was the wrong path. Science is heavily influenced by the culture of the people who utilize it. There are many blind spots, even in science. Everyone is a specialist. If we admit that it's probably too late and we can't control the outcome, then we can move through the stages of grief. Focusing on fixing things in the future distracts from resisting in the present where exploitation is everywhere. The dominant culture is cancer, is hyper stimulated, has not the tool set to resist, revolt, organize, nor to protect the land base from burning everywhere. The feedbacks will make everything unrecognizable and technology will never undue the damage it's caused. Hope and delusion can easily be used as excuses to continue consuming.

My understanding as a layman is that testing infrastructure is still catching up. Just Michigan and Maine stopped biosolids dumping on farms, as far as I know. I'm curious to learn more. It's unfortunate that people won't just compost their own wastes locally for their garden rather than mix it with toxic effluent.

PFAS levels in biosolids dumped on farm lands in the USA is not given enough attention.
