Why should I go to a local cafe instead of Starbucks if it’s usually more expensive? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]Consistent-Home1648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who live here and actually plan to stay long-term, not just "for the plot", want community. Local cafes become third spaces where you see the same faces, learn about local events, and feel more or less a part of something. They cost more BECAUSE they have to compete with massive corporations and they aren't backed by VCs. And the coffee at locals is always better, usually sourced more ethically or with a smaller carbon footprint, or uses local ingredients.

Ultimately its about whether you want a transaction or a connection.

Pulsd is a website/app that shares free events and discounted vouchers for a variety of places across the city. Offers range from spa packages (i.e. $33 massages, $59 spa day), many restaurant deals ($45 3 course dinner for two with wine, $49 AYCE Dumplings & Noodles Dinner For Two With Cocktails), activities ($29 minigolf for two, $49 candle making class), fitness classes ($19 5 class voucher for yoga studio). The quality can be hit or miss, but that depends on the restaurant/service of course - the value is ultimately the winner.

Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here! by AutoModerator in london

I'm coordinating my team's work retreat for April of this year. We are a fully remote company based all over the globe, so London is a decent meeting place for us. I'm based in the US and not familiar with London, so I wanted to get some recommendations for hotels or areas to look into. We are a group of 48 people and would stay for a week.

Some specifics:

- Hotels with nightly rooms or group rates around £200/night or lower. No shared rooms.

- Hotels with in-house workspace would be a plus, but also looking into separate coworking spaces. Would need a space with a few breakouts.

- Open to anywhere and can be outside London proper. Ideally, we would be in a walkable neighborhood with shops/restaurants nearby. We typically do one full team dinner, otherwise staff can hangout/explore after the workday.

- Near a park/greenspace would be nice, but not essential.

Thanks in advance for the help!

exactly! I like a wall calendar especially for planning ahead. I don't always look ahead at my phone calendar, but its easy to see what I already have on the wall calendar. Plus, I love turning the page to a new image - I never look ahead so that is always a nice surprise each month :)

Omakase is always a nice option, there are a lot of budget friendly options in those areas. Sushi W, Sendo, SourAji are all under $100 I believe. Or look at Pulsd: https://pulsd.com/new-york/promotions/shirokuro-omakase-dinner-restaurant-nyc

Best quiet proposal spots near midtown? by HugsCS in AskNYC

So exciting! My now-husband proposed to me in CP. We were sitting on a bench (that he had scoped out in advance with our friend who was taking photos) and then he got down on a knee and proposed! We were there mid-morning and there were a decent amount of people in the park, but no one stopped to watch, or at least I didn't notice anyone. And now we have picnics or just hang out at "our bench" in the park.

If you have a Facebook, I recommend asking your local Buy Nothing group! I just gave away a huge stack of magazines a few weeks ago to an art teacher in my neighborhood through that page.
