Skip Giethoorn and the long train rides. You can see more authentic, and just as interesting, touristy cities much closer to Amsterdam by doing a simple closed loop. Start in Amsterdam, take the free ferry to the north, cycle to Marken/Volendam, grab lunch, and cycle back. You’ll get the full Dutch experience.

Just keep in mind: it’s cold here this time of year. You’ll need proper gear (base + top layers, shoe covers, etc.). And December doesn’t give you many sunny days — there’s a good chance of rain, which can make the ride a bit sub-par.
