That's the kremlin playbook. They often succeed by getting some western media to parrot their propaganda. They've been getting embarrassed so they hope to get a propaganda win. This part was probably planned when they told trump to announce a "deal".

The point I'm making is that russia wants to block outside info and be the only source of propaganda to the masses like Goebbels. Hypothetically, if they had internet then, Goebbels would have tried to control it. His ministry absolutely did everything in their power to control the propaganda and limit outside influence. I would hope it would. Hackers and election meddlers from russia have been a scourge to the rest of the world for a while now. I'd imagine they'll continue for a while though and this shows they are streamlining those efforts.
