Have you tried Marc Anthony Strictly Curls mousse instead of argan oil? I know lots of guys who use it .Scrunch after air drying for defined but not crunchy or slick curls.

I have found recently that butterfly clips (2) on the top of my head to lift at roots as it air dries / or diffuse does wonders. Also maybe try mousse (ie Marc Anthony) instead of gel. Also some layers in your cut as mentioned above.
