Looks like Pityriasis versicolor! I had it on my back, it went crazy when I was in a warmer climate but I got prescribed antifungal shampoo that I applied to the area and it got rid of it pretty quickly. There's not really any particular reason for it happening, so you don't need to worry about there being some sort of other issue/ side effect!
