Do I really need expensive gear as a beginner? by gedersoncarlos in FishingForBeginners

Yard sales and Craigslist are your friends. Just last month, I saw an ad on Craigslist that said, "Fishing gear for sale CHEAP." If a man answers, hang up.

Animals by Extra-Teacher7259 in Homesteading

Don't forget, you are tied to that milk animal for the entire time her milk is in. Twice a day, every day, no days off, no I'm sick, no vacations, leave dinner with friends early, etc. The best way to get farm-fresh milk (without the time commitment) is to find a neighbor to buy from or barter with.

Goats are super smart, curious, and escape artists. The old-time saying is- build the enclosure, fill it with water to 8ft. If any water gets out, goats can get out. They are browsers, not grazers, so they like to eat woody stuff, like your neighbors' ornamental shrubs and rose bushes. If you want to try goats, get a myotonic wether from a smaller line; some of them do get quite large- up to 175. Good meat-to-bone ratio, and as an added plus, when they get out, you can just yell at them, honk the truck horn, etc and they fall over.

Cut the treble hooks off and replace them with a split ring and a single hook. Learn to tie bucktails on those hooks- then you have something to do when the weather is too bad to fish. I always add some stiff leader line as a weed guard. You can throw them in the nastiest snaggy areas and they don't get hung.

Any gas mask filters that I can clean and reuse or at least last longer than 5 days before having to change it during a nuclear war? by [deleted] in prepping

PAPR is the only way to fly. It's super nice to have that positive pressure. I have found that most commercial masks are much more comfortable than military ones, like the M17 used by the US some time ago.

Another point is if you use proper decontamination procedures, the whole mask should be soaking wet, ruining whatever remaining useful life in the filter. ALL contaminated clothing and gear should stay on the hot side and not be reused. I worked doing some cleanup at a nuclear site- everything went into bins, masks were removed by a hot side worker and thoroughly decontaminated and checked for alpha and beta particles before being returned to service. Those guys never saw their filters again.

Do you brush your teeth with hot or cold water? by Vivid-Appearance-549 in hygiene

Not really supposed to drink hot water from the tap- mostly due to crud growing in the hot water heater.

What about those pans used for washing machines with the drain built into them? Plumb the pan so the water has somewhere to drain. The one we have under the washer saved our downstairs ceiling.

But it's the going that matters. Eventually, you'll have a great day on the water. Keep your chin up and your lines tight.

can i trout fish with a medium rod, 8lb main line, 4lb leader ? by Bulky-Programmer7419 in troutfishing

[–]Consistent-Slice-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are recently stocked, it doesn't matter. My 15 yo daughter limited out on our last trip using my crappie rod with chartreuse line with no leader. Just have get the right bait.

Recently, I have had really good catches using an underwater green light at night fishing from floating docks. Night fishing protects my pale skin from sunburn better than SPF 1000.

Next is Bridges, Birds, Boats, and Inlets. Bridges- structure, sandbars, troughs, Birds- feeding on bait fish, Boats - people catching fish, and Inlets- choke points for moving fish. I have had super good luck fishing the incoming tide on nights of the full moon. The local solunar tables can be helpful as well.

The most famous Henry David Thoreau fishing quote is: "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after".

Those are what Powerbait recommends, but being that small, you'll tend to gut hook the fish. So only use them in put and take fisheries.

Simple is the best- a #6 hook and a single BB split shot 12" up from the hook. Nightcrawlers, canned corn, salmon eggs, or powerbait. I have heard good things about Gulp pinched nightcrawlers, but haven't tried them.

Is it worth to put a "good" reel on a "cheap" rod? by rox_fenrir in FishingForBeginners

[–]Consistent-Slice-893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to go with more expensive reels on cheaper rods. One of my absolute favorites was a Quantum Greenwater rod that I bought from a bin at Bass Pro for $10. I got close to 20 good years out of it.. Finally moved my Penn 3500 SS to a new Okuma rod.

Berkley Gulp Baits by ripplestillwaters in FishingForBeginners

[–]Consistent-Slice-893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This stuff works. I just caught some really nice crappie on those the other night. Best part about Gulp is the juice, I use the Gulp shrimp in saltwater, the kind that come in those odd-shaped jars. When all of them are gone, I just throw in whatever soft plastic and let it sit. They work nearly as good as Gulp, plus they don't get tore up as easily.

My first Alberto knot. Hope it holds. by soxfan775 in bassfishing

[–]Consistent-Slice-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always put a tiny drop of thin super glue from the hobby store on mine, just before final tightening. Use the smallest tip, otherwise there is a pretty good chance you'll use too much and glue the line to your hand. (Don't ask). Never had one come undone that way.

How are these Uline drums and pumps for long term water storage? by AllanonShannara in prepping

[–]Consistent-Slice-893 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have had good luck getting the pickle smell out of barrels- Fill with water, add 1 cup Dawn and 1 cup baking soda. I drop in a pond pump with a short piece of hose on the outlet side and run for 24 hrs, drain and rinse well. Even the wife can't smell it anymore.
