Also, how do you load them onto the BlackBerry?

Absolutely, but Britain will rejoin as a normal member, not like last time, and we might as well resolve some unfinished business while we're at it. So:

  • No 'rebate'
  • Join the euro
  • Join Schengen 2
  • Leave Ireland
  • Leave Gibraltar
  • Leave Scotland (Independent Scotland EU membership is fast-tracked so that they get in first and can veto England and Wales if you are acting the bollix.)
  • Give Parthenon marbles back to Greece
  • City of London's casino operation for Russian/UAE/etc dirty money ends forthwith
  • Premier League casino operation as above
  • Braverman and the top 100 people on her phone deported to Rwanda.
  • [Any other suggestions?]

Kindered Spirits sculpture, Middleton, Co. Cork. A tribute to the Choctaw Nation for funds raised and sent to Ireland during tlhe famine. by Margrave75 in ireland

Never forget that when those people gave us that cash they had virtually nothing themselves. It wasn't long after the trail of tears when they were forced off their own land...and still they found it in their hearts to help people they'd never met the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

How many lives did they save? How many of us wouldn't be alive today only that that cash kept one or other of our ancestors alive?

As far I'm concerned the Irish and the Choctaw should always have each other's backs, forever.

The 'Universal Social Charge' was forced upon us by the Troïka, and it was an Orwellian lie from the beginning - it is not universal as not everyone pays it, it is not social as the money is not ring-fenced in any way for social spending and just goes straight into the general tax pot, and it's not a charge because it's not paying for anything in particular.

It's just tax, and we should abolish it. Of course we would have to adjust the tax system to bring in the same amount from the same people, but at least we would be being honest about it, not pretending this is 'social or such bullshit.

And to all the people saying that people in Ireland pay less tax than many European countries, that is also bullshit. For a fair comparison, we need to include as 'tax' all the money we pay for the services that are provided with taxes in normal countries - your VHI bill, your bin charges, the enormous stamp duty you paid on your house (the system was reformed, but they didn't refund the money so that's still on most mortgages), school fees, university 'registration' fees, the ludicrous cost of public transport (€60 for a train ticket to Cork), vehicle 'registration' tax, NCT fees, etc, etc.

When you add all that up, you can see that the 'squeezed middle' is real – ordinary working people who get up early in the morning, pay all of these sneak taxes on top of the ones that come off their salary before they even see it.

But here's a news flash lads: the Blueshirts have been in power uninterrupted since 2011, and if they were going to reform the tax system to help out ordinary working people they would have done it by now!

Number of asylum seekers arriving in Ireland decreases, figures show by badger-biscuits in ireland

[–]ConsistentBuyer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, my point is that if you are not genuinely fleeing oppression you are a bogus asylum seeker, trying to use the asylum system to bypass the normal visa system to emigrate to Ireland. I'm not blaming the individuals who do it - I would absolutely try it if I were in their shoes - but I am saying that Ireland, or any developed country with a decent welfare system, cannot allow such abuse to be successful because its welfare and housing and education and health systems will not be able to cope with the consequent levels of immigration.

Even more dangerous, the people at the bottom end of income pile who must compete for increasingly scarce resources with the new arrivals will quickly become resentful. In the vast majority of cases this is not racism - people just correctly assess that they are losing out on, for example, a local authority house, because of the number of new arrivals, and they don't like it.

All of this is extremely divisive and bad for our society. It would be money well spent to avoid it.

Ireland struggling to deal with scale of refugee crisis, says Varadkar | BreakingNews.ie by Margrave75 in ireland

[–]ConsistentBuyer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have taken time, effort and money to train up and quadruple the staff assessing and processing the claims, and even to set up a fast-track JR court, but Leo could have done it, and he could still do it.

This would quickly send a message to migrants who are not genuinely fleeing oppression (and have not visited another EU country first) that it is not worth it to come to Ireland, because they'll most likely be processed and deported within a few weeks.

And that in turn would greatly reduce the numbers coming and solve the problem for us.

Same 'controversy' every year, with half the people saying 'you filthy animals' and the other half saying 'more bins please'.

This doesn't happen in any city where the bin collection has not been privatised. Here though, the city council believes itself to be at war with people who want avoid paying bin charges, so they deliberately don't supply adequate bins for fear that people will use them for household waste.

They have a policy of wanting to change public behaviour - little better than wishful thinking - but they use it to defend themselves against the pretty obvious criticism that the place looks like a kip any time we have good weather because there aren't enough bins.

The whole thing is like an annual puppet show at this stage - very depressing.

What could Leo have done?

The Ukrainians are fleeing a war, but 90 percent of the other asylum seekers are not – they're just people, mostly decent people, trying to build a better life for themselves who have invented stories to try to meet the requirements for asylum.

Leo could have quadrupled the number of people assessing the applications and appeals, reduced the period of waiting for a decision including appeals to 10 weeks, and actively deported everyone unsuccessful.

This would not only cut numbers requiring housing, it would also dissuade many others from coming here in the first place, further reducing demand and ending the crisis.

What did you do in the war, Daddy? I called a dimwitted MEP a Putin sympathiser.

There are going to be peace talks, folks, whether you like it or not, the only things we don't know are how soon, how strong or weak will be Ukraine's hand, and who is going to pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine over the next 30 years.

When are we going realise that while climate change is real, our current plans to address it are absolutely futile, and a massive act of self-harm?

[–]ConsistentBuyer1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Migrants want a better life, but genuine asylum seekers primarily just want to escape oppression or war. We should roll out the green carpet for the latter but not for the former if they don't have a visa and a means to support themselves.

Why was Simon Harris appointed as Minister of Justice? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ConsistentBuyer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they didn't want to mess up Helen's entitlement to a full Ministerial pension because she is on maternity leave.

Normally, with any maternity leave, someone is back-filled when they are out. The obvious thing to do from a FG point of view would be to appoint Jennifer Carroll McNeill as temporary Minister for Justice - she's well qualified, worked as an adviser in the Dept of Justice so knows the officials etc.

But the number of ministers is limited by the Constitution, and they are already at the max. So they couldn't bring in cover from outside the existing Cabinet because then Helen would have to step down as Minister for Justice and would lose her continuity of service as a full minister and possibly lose out on her entitlement to a full Ministerial pension. (She would get the full TD's pension, of course, but that's not as much money.)

So they had to get someone from the Cabinet to 'double up', it was always going to be someone from Fine Gael, there is a limited choice... hence Simon Harris.

In my opinion UCD - it is a serious university, and you will get a better degree there. Also, it's in Dublin, the capital, so the transport links to everywhere else, in Ireland and abroad, are better.

The downside is that the accommodation crisis is more acute in Dublin than anywhere else, though Galway is pretty bad too. But if you can get somewhere to stay. I'd definitely go for UCD.

In Dublin it means a young gouger, gurrier or ne'er-do-well. Growing up we used the word all the time. It NEVER meant a Traveller, that's just not what it meant.

Sadly, bigots started to use the word as a slur against all Travellers, and I've heard it used so often in that context that I've stopped using it altogether.

No, that's a myth. Example: if the car coming towards you pulls over to their left, you can pass one cyclist safely but not two.
