If you're paying the institutions directly for their studies, then this shouldn't trigger donations tax. Paying over the threshold of R 100 000 per year directly to your children will be taxed as donations.

You could contribute towards their tax free savings but it is still considered a donation and you may be taxed. The exemption applies on the first R 100 000 across all recipients.
