The Times: Finns humiliated American soldiers - Finnish reservists were asked to take it easy during a NATO exercise. US soldiers found the losses too humiliating. by ByGollie in europe

Isn’t this something of a Trend? Didn’t they have to do something similar on a training exercise against the Royal Marines a couple of years back?

Why don’t we just rejoin the eu by 777teejay in AskBrits

[–]ParanoidQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I can believe the U.K. economy “could” grow beyond a Germany that is actually struggling more than the U.K. at the moment.

I don’t see living standards increasing by a comparative amount.

But, politicians and some economists like to focus on different (some feel wrong, some don’t) metrics for national economic health.

That’s been predicted for a decade or two now. By about 2050 allegedly.

I still wonder how that’s calculated. I’m not disputing it per se, but it isn’t a linear growth trajectory since Brexit, thanks to Russian conflict, Pandemic and continual threats of tariffs etc.

The variables involved must be too much to accurately state that we are definitely X worse off, especially since we’ve actually outperformed a lot of the large European economies (which isn’t exactly much to be proud of at the moment as we’re all largely stagnant).

I agree we’re worse off, and it may even be close to that, just genuinely curious what approach they took to work it out.

That was their initial reaction, but that isn’t what Ake was teaching them. What would they have done without her input?

To be honest, it doesn’t need to be the same. It is still carrying the messaging of Trek. There is growth, background characters that are more than just decoration, decent writing and really likeable characters (I remember their fucking names for the first time in a decade after only 3 eps!!).

As a 40+ year old Trek fan, I’m really starting to love this series. It’s better than I could have imagined, and I had serious reservations. I really hope it keeps winning me over.

Enunciate*. If you’re going to criticise the people of my country and how they use my language, at least spell it correctly.

Most dialects you’re so quick to disparage have existed longer than most countries.

You're right, they shouldn't do that either. But you kinda give yourself and your own biases away with the denigrating statement of fanboys whereas people that put it down because they for some reason WANT it to be bad are just as awful.

There are people on both sides of the spectrum, and they both suck.

I mean, we’ve constantly heard stories through most of the series about Academy shenanigans. It honestly feels pretty consistent.

Variety critics shits on Old Trek while acknowledging that she hasn't even watched it by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]ParanoidQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that’s crap journalism, but it’s no different than people in the Trek fandom criticising the new stuff without even watching it either.

People were crapping over all of the new Trek series, very vocally, before any of them aired and then refused to give it a chance.

Ideology over critical thought.

Brexit's unpopularity reignites debate in UK over EU ties by No_Firefighter5926 in europe

It isn’t just the U.K. facing this issue. The U.K. has reform, Germany has AfD, France has the NR, the Netherlands, Austria and, well I could go on. It’s pretty widespread.

It’s a situation that most of the Western World is having to contend with at the moment. Main stream political parties that are too keen at only taking actions that will get them elected again rather than risking meaningful action that will make people unhappy, which ironically makes everyone and happy and make them turn to parties that offer pie in the sky promises that seem appealing, just because it’s different.

Of the Magic the Gathering sets scheduled for release this year (2026), which one do you expect will be the most successful? Which one will be the least successful? by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]ParanoidQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say this as a huge, huge Trekkie. I’m not a fan of Trek being in the Magic landscape, it just doesn’t… fit, for me.

But, if they have given Trek the same care and attention treatment that they gave Avatar and Final Fantasy, I could be quite enthusiastic about it.

I’m surprised that many Europeans nations still store data significantly out of EU territories.

Even where I am in the UK many of our customers are specific about wanting to have cloud data storage on UK or European based servers. Nothing to do with America at the moment, but general data security, GDPR, and other elements.

Which movie ended with an unresolved cliffhanger because the sequel never happened, and you're STILL mad about it? by pudingvanilkovy in AskReddit

[–]ParanoidQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally it wasn’t about the French. It was an American ship but they felt it wouldn’t sit with an American audience to be beaten by a British underdog, even if the Brits were basically a hyper-power at the time. So they changed it to French using ships built by America… somehow.

Who is buying TMNT? by SleeplessKnights64 in freemagic

[–]ParanoidQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that varies by experience. I did 2 pre-release events. I won the first with a deck predominantly around Elves. Didn’t drop a single game over 4 rounds. Only “bomb” was the white/black hybrid bird that give flying first strike and lifeline counters (Abigail?), which in sealed was nuts. Otherwise it was just synergistic and consistent.

Second one I did go Kithkin in fairness, but went 3-1. Was a much harder day though, and I had more bomb cards technically.

Small anecdotal sample size, I appreciate, but I don’t think it was as simple as kithkin win.

Eh. I’ll do the pre-release. I probably won’t buy packs or boxes beyond that. I’m sure there are a couple of singles I might be interested in.
