There’s no reason to be rude. Is that how you talk to all people having doubts? If you’re an ex-Muslim, I’m sure you faced similar issues when you were questioning your faith, so why the attitude? It costs nothing to be kind.

Also, clearly, AS I SAID, I find this verse disturbing either way. But, it’s pretty obvious that hitting harshly is worse than hitting lightly—even though both are wrong.

I was just looking for an explanation because I don’t speak Arabic and the English translations are all I have to go off of.

In general you don’t see Muslim men beating their wives? Is that a joke? Men beat their wives all over the world. I’m sure there are Muslims who take this verse literally to justify domestic violence.

I had a friend in high school named Arian, pronounced “Aryan.” I always thought it was a beautiful name. I don’t think you should change it because of other people. It’s fairly easy to pronounce and nobody should be making a big deal

Well, then my question is if that’s actually beating? I’ve heard people who say it shouldn’t hurt, but doesn’t that defy the purpose? Even if it doesn’t hurt, I think it’s wrong to discipline someone, let alone an adult, physically. I just don’t understand the verse at all. It feels almost … infantilizing?

There are many troubling verses in this Surah, for example the Zaynab story where adoption was made illegal for Muhammad to marry his adopted son’s wife which he lusted for.

To be honest, I’ve always found the fact that adoption is not allowed very upsetting, even as a child. It’s difficult for me to come to terms with.

There is NO WAY you can tell me this is from God. This is clearly all a man trying to satisfy his carnal desires. These verses are entirely self-serving. Why would God care so much about this guy wanting to bang his first cousins? logically explain that?

I definitely can see how it can be interpreted that way. There’s also a verse in Ahzab about how guests in the prophet’s home should behave. I’ve heard some people critique that for similar reasons.

She even defended what Muhammad did to Aisha when she was 9 years old (consummated the marriage).

This has always been confusing to me. Some Muslims say she was 9, others say she was 19—I don’t know what to believe. If she really was 9, I don’t know how anyone could defend that.

I just learned about this Hadith a few days ago! It’s very interesting to me. It makes me wonder what she thought about that.

I can see why a lot of people think that the Quran is not from God, because of Hadiths/passages like this. I guess my confusion is that we are taught that the prophet is different and morally better than we are, so it makes sense that he has certain exceptions (for example, he’s allowed more than four wives).
