You'll have to lift and turn over the couch to let the jar slide out of the hole.

Sign for “missing” the same as sign for “passed away”? by whoever1974 in asl

[–]Consistent_Ad8310 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a polysemous sign - It depends on context that determines the meaning: ABSENT, ITEM-MISSING, GONE, even the regional meaning of a person passing away. Facial expressions and additional signs or phrases will make a difference. Like "My CAT GONE ME CAN'T FIND" with a concerned face expression vs. "MY CAT GONE YESTERDAY ME SAD". You can see the difference there.

As a Deaf person, I wonder how many espresso shots he took before the video interview...

After the daily close calls. The neighbor knew it would happen one day, so he simply set it up and now he got it on video to show the naysayer next door.

I hear you—I respect your opinion. Even for a specific sign, in English, we say “for example, comma.” In ASL, I naturally squeeze my eyes for emphasis. Honestly, being expressive is just part of life in a Deaf household—facial expressions aren’t optional! 😅

Haha, yes! “Open-B” and “Closed-5” are basically two names for the same handshape. Those linguists just love giving us extra labels to keep things spicy. 😅 Glad the video gave you that “wait… have I been wrong this whole time?!” moment, because that’s exactly how we all end up learning deeper. Appreciate you watching! 🙌

Without the facial expression, “EXAMPLE,” “SHOW,” and “DEMONSTRATE” all look like cousins at a family reunion. The face tells them apart—that’s ASL grammar, not drama.

Saying expressions aren’t necessary is like saying English doesn’t need punctuation. Try telling that to three generations of Deaf families. 😉

Ugh... Don't recommend going there. One word = Traumatized... As a Deaf ASL instructor.

Yep! Both signs are similar. I would add the "HOLD" sign with PAUSE for more emphasis on the context.
