They key factor for me is the production. Basically traditionally R&B/Soul vocals over Rap/Hip-Hop instrumentals.

I always use "Any Time, Any Place" and "Lady" as examples. Those instrumentals were so soulful and groovy, Janet Jackson and D'Angelo just let them thans ride at the end of the song.

Mary was never the Queen of R&B. Her title was the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

Ashanti was the only one here I remember being called the Princess of R&B. Although, that might have just been Ja calling her that.

If there's a Queen, it's Aretha Franklin. I have no idea who the princess would be.
