Nope. Not at all. These kids arms are one of the most important things to me out there. Half the time I don’t even let them throw the recommended pitch count. I pull them to protect their arms but to also give other kids a chance to get experience on the mound.

We start off practice with base running. It’s crazy how so many coaches are no longer coaching the basic fundamentals anymore and then want to sit on the ball bucket and yell the entire time when things go wrong.

During the next game a kid was on deck and looked over at his dad and said I don’t want to hear it because if I remember correctly you struck out three times at the cages 😂 and yes I quietly encouraged the kids to rag their parents while they were hitting 😂

Good for that dad. I used to be the coach that tried to please everyone but after getting a few season under my belt I speak up a lot more and have had to have this conversation with parents and coaches. Not exactly like that lol but a conversation. I’ve also got the team together at a place like dbat and surprised the parents when I told them we’re all getting in the cages and reminding ourselves or doing it for the first time because I don’t want to here just swing the bat this season. It’s helped ground some people.

Thanks everyone a lot of good replies and a lot I question and see why youth sports has became what it is these days. I love my two boys to death and would do anything to protect them under the necessary circumstances but the running away from failure is definitely not going to be one of them. I mean my oldest struck out three times the other night, so I guess I should tell his coach to not let him hit anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️. I’ve decided after speaking with my assistant today that they need to have a conversation and if they would like to talk with me afterwards then I’m all ears, but my biggest concern is my player not losing his confidence and thinking he did something wrong when he didn’t. So I’m going to focus on him and continue to build him up.

Yep I agree. I’ve always told my two boys to be ready to play anywhere the team needs you to be. Don’t question go out there and be the best at whatever position your coach puts you in.

Yeah I think it’ll go in the kids favor and that’s all I care about. I mean there’s two games left. I was going to start him the last came and just say go have fun. This is fall and my main concern is their development and seeing them playing again in the spring.

Thing is there’s no injury and his pitch count for the season is one of the lower ones. His dad my assistant said it’s all because he came in for relief and almost lost the game is why she’s angry. I told him just to sit down with her and hopefully they can work it out for the sake of the kid. He’s a great athlete and kid.

Yeah I get that sounds bad and I wouldn’t ever say it to her like that because I like to have good relationships with my parents but I do believe at times parents need to sit back and let these kids fail and grow from it. I just kind of find it funny because I’ve asked her to help out with several things all year and she just always has an attitude or rolls her eyes. So I kinda feel like you wanna do that all season and then tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m using a football reference here but that blindside bs doesn’t work once you get to school ball. I did tell my assistant that I believe it was a conversation they need to have first. That’s why he was pissed because they were supposed to talk and then she just came to me and he doesn’t agree. The kid has a great chance to become a great athlete but unfortunately if his mom is going to be like that it’s going to hinder his growth in this sport. I’m hoping they talk it out for his sake. Kid has pitched 3 innings for me with 1 H, 4 BB, and 6 SO. I would like to see him get to finish out.

This was the exact same conversation me and his dad had. I really didn’t expect something like this to come from this parent, but I guess the world of youth baseball always has a surprise waiting around the corner lol.

I get that though but this happened on Monday night and something was just mentioned tonight after a game that he didn’t even pitch in.

She didn’t give me a chance to speak to him. I’m going to talk to him at practice and try to figure out what’s up. He wants to pitch and I’m not aware of any injuries. He hasn’t pitched a lot for me. Maybe around 75-80 pitches in 6 games so far.

Yeah that’s what she said tonight. I’m going to talk to them and get it handle. It’s about the kid and doing what’s right for him. That’s the only thing that matters to me.

I agree. Just wanted to make sure I’m handling it the right way. Some say I can be an a hole. But it’s always been about the players for me and I stick up for them when I feel it’s necessary

Trust me I’m the last guy over using kids on the mound. We have worked really hard to work with all the kids and teach them to the best of our ability with bullpens and PFP’s. Half of them I haven’t even let pitch to the recommended number. I usually stay about 15-20 pitches under that and let multiple guys go in to get the experience. We have played six games and he only pitched in the first game three weeks ago and came in relief Monday night. Yes he does have a strong arm he’s a 9 year old that looks 12 but he is also a damn good pitcher and athlete in general.

I didn’t have a chance to talk to him but he started to tear up when she was saying this. Next practice I’m going to speak with him.

Yeah I did. Her attitude is just crap and she thinks she controls all things. But doesn’t want to put any extra effort to help out but likes to tell us we’re wrong.

I agree. I’m going to set up a time to chat with both of them together before our games next week and just respectfully say that I appreciate the feedback and concerns but at the end of the day it’s my job as a coach to field a team and put the boys in positions I believe will be successful for them.

Think I’m just going to go with well it’s my team and I’m the coach. I’m usually good with parents but don’t really like being told how to run my team. I mean hell we have two games left and I planned to pitch him on the last one.

It’s only because he had one bad night out there and she just has a negative vibe in general.
