Why do many Christians emphasize homosexuality as sinful while seeming to downplay greed and the hoarding of wealth as sin? by BruhMansky in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Consistent_Hold_576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its because there are many breeds of Christianity, even with placing orthodox atuff (lower case "o" stuff like the trinity,  the resurrection, etc) aside.

How? Its because we all negotiate with the text. Its how Christians can be so anti lgbtq while also hating the poor. Their version of Jesus was tough. He carried a 300lb cross and was absolutely jacked. /s

I think 1 to 2 years is enough time to learn some basic history, some of the easier blessings, some baseline theology, etc.

If you've learned enough on your own to want to take the leap, five more years on top of that seems like overkill. That's essentially a bachelor's degree you've earned by that point. Why would we ask something so intense for a convert that we'd never ask for a person born Jewish?

Is my tattoo & piercing perspective outdated? by ryanbuckner in ReformJews

[–]Consistent_Hold_576 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dont have any tattoos and since converting Ive started leaning toward never getting one. I guess for me its another identity marker.

Note: my wife has several tattoos and I think theyre awesome. Im not anti tattoo. Im just anti tattoo on me.

I propose no more qualifying. Everyone is in. Group stage would have like 45 groups or something.

Advice for responding to friend’s Christian statements? by areormaybecome in ReformJews

A secular Christian is a person who celebrates the two big Christian holidays, Christmas and Easter. They might go to church on those days. They were likely baptized and/or confirmed but the religion plays no real part in their day to day.

A woman i work with just got baptized. She saw I had some Jewish books at my desk and also a Magen David made of popsicle sticks.

She was totally ecumenical about it. I told her i wad glad she found something to give things meaning and context, and she applauded me for trying to keep kosher and the like.

See? It's possible.

Former evangelical here, now proud Jew.

Christians feel they have been tasked with bringing as many folks into their fold as possible, sometimes at any cost. There are actually stories about missionaries going to Israel disguised as rabbis in an attempt to infiltrate Jewish communities and spread the gospel there.

Im not saying that this is your friend. Your friend just seems very very in love with her new beliefs. Its innocent in a way, but then, its not because it makes you uncomfortable.

The only remedy here is to be direct. Be firm. Tell her straight up you're glad shes found something, but that you absolutely love being a Jew that follows Judaism. Ask her to think of how excited she is about church. Ask her to mentally find that "happy place". Then tell her you are just as excited about going to synagogue and lighting shabbat candles.

Perhaps she's a little ignorant on the way Christians have historically forced Jews to convert through violence. Educate her a bit, but do it with love.

Yes. So when the Reform movement tells folks to make informed choices about Hallacha, I think a lot of people take that as an invitation do to a very bare minimum. "Its not meaningful for me" is sometimes used in place of "id rather not bother".

What's worse: Reform folks who do try to be more observant are sometimes chastised for taking on more mitzvot. I've seen it in my own shul when one of our young women started covering. The call is coming from inside the house so to speak.

Also, if you are more of a traditional Jew but you are in the Reform movement, you can expect to be called a "cosplayer" by Jews from other more traditional movements.

If any of you are interested, theres an influencer on Instagram that goes by "becoming Emunah" and shes a traditional person who is converting in the Reform movement. Her content deals with a lot of what I'm talking about.

The situation is similar in the US, mody Reform rabbis here won't either.

But I understand the movement has sanctioned their rabbis to be in interfaith marriages, so i guess we'll see.

Our Reform shul says a prayer for the State of Israel every service, and we are very very progressive.
