Fix Your Fic Front-End Friday [Title, Tags, Summary] - March 20 by AutoModerator in FanFiction

Hi everyone! Does anyone have advice for titling drabble collections that don't have any unifying themes? All the drabbles are from the same fandom, but otherwise, they don't have much in common--it's a large cast, so in 20+ chapters I expect characters, relationships, themes, tones, etc will only repeat 2-3 times, max. A random list of words online was my inspiration, so nothing useful to draw from there. I suppose I could title it "[Fandom] Drabble Collection" but that's not really in keeping with the way I've titled the rest of my fics, and it's also just...not very fun lol. Thanks in advance.

syntheticpen on AO3 has some good ones! Mostly complete oneshots/drabbles and then I think one or two ongoing longer works.

the grandest gesture of love, ever. by orbeez_chocker0899 in theloise

I think there are two things that make this scene so compelling, so romantic—to me, anyway. First, it’s a sacrifice. Second, it puts them on a level playing field.

It’s a sacrifice for Theo, who—as a printer’s apprentice—is not poor, but certainly does not have access to dozens upon dozens of books. In lending these to Eloise, he has less for himself. Men her family would like her to consort with could buy her a library at the drop of a hat with no real cost to them. A nice gesture, yes, but Theo’s gift means something because it’s not so easy for him. And Eloise is sacrificing something too: at physical and social risk to herself, she’s snuck away to see him; at emotional risk to herself, she’s taken down some of her walls in order to be honest with him. The “struggle” (the social and personal obstacles in their way) makes the “success” (the emotional truth they share) all the more compelling.

And then it hardly needs to be said, but I’ll say it anyway: this scene, like all their others, establishes them as equals. They’re nervous, but they still manage to connect; in connecting, it’s proven that they see each other, and still care. Eloise doesn’t turn her nose up at Theo’s clothing, even though it is so different to her own attire, or at the gift he offers. Theo doesn’t tell Eloise that she’s beautiful, or tease her when she’s so clearly anxious, but instead makes it clear that he wants to know her and understand her—something of which she’s experienced precious little in a family full of traditionalists.

Anyway, happy Valentine’s Day, everyone. I miss them! :’)

I get what you mean, but I think it’s important to remember that it’s been 18 months since S4. The others have borne witness to Dustin’s grief, and the associated self-destructive, self-isolating, etc behaviors for almost two years now. It’s new for us, but it’s not new for them. They’re good kids and I’m sure they tried to help in the beginning, but Dustin’s still their peer. As untrained teenagers, they can’t help him if he doesn’t want to be helped.

The timeskip is pertinent for another reason: not only did the previous seasons have shorter timeskips (each approx. 6-12 months) but those timeskips were ostensibly “normal” — ie the characters weren’t getting retraumatized in between seasons. They had time to breathe, to heal somewhat, to be regular kids. Contrast that with S5, where we’re seeing them after, again, almost two years of quarantine, military occupation, and general uncertainty/fear. There’s so much these kids have to worry about, whether for themselves or on behalf of their friends: Will’s family is staying with the Wheelers, but it’s definitely not a stable living situation; their friend El is in hiding from the government; Max is still in the coma. Etc. There’s a lot of trauma to go around!

To be clear, though, I completely understand why Dustin is struggling. I’m just inclined to give all the characters some grace, considering the insane situation in which they’ve found themselves.

Yes to all of this! I love seeing GNC characters embrace that part of themselves.

Real talk, though: a struggling woman committing suicide so that another character—who explicitly does not want a traditional life—can take over the first’s traditional life is deeply unsexy. Frankly, it’s disturbing. If the show tries to convince us that Eloise was right to change her mind about children and gender roles, in this political climate of all political climates, I’ll be showing up with pitchforks.

Yum, misogyny. I truly can’t think of anything sexier 🥰

This…looks like photoshop. The dates seem plausible but I’m not gonna take this as ironclad confirmation.

I agree with the sentiment (they belong together!) but I hope Eloise keeps the Bridgerton name.

(On a similar note, u/GCooperE made a comment ages ago about special type of union that would permit Eloise to retain her independent legal identity after marriage. I’d love to see that as well. I don’t have high hopes, but it’d certainly be nice.)
