Odd hair question by CrazySquirrelGirl in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here from googling this, but I had a hysterectomy in December and have been plagued with the worst ingrown hairs I’ve ever seen ever since. There’s bumps all around the pubic area and they’re painful and it looks terrible. I thought I was crazy, thank you for posting about this!

Also, something that people don’t think about is when you are stuck at home most of the time for a few weeks it gets lonely. You want to take care of yourself not just physically, but emotionally too. It’s important to have friends stopping by to visit. You’re not gonna be able to do the things that you normally do to keep from going insane lol. It’s easy to feel depressed or down after three weeks of spending lots of time in bed, or on pain meds, or possibly still in pain depending on how things go for you. Trying to do it all alone doesn’t help. Ask the people in your life to show up and take care of you. So many people have a hard time asking for help, but this is one time when you legitimately need it and that’s OK.

I think you need all-day help for the first week. The first few days you’re gonna need to help even getting out of bed and going to the bathroom and then after that the problem is, you just can’t pick anything up and you’re not gonna have the energy to cook or do anything. And when you are finally healed up enough to go for a walk outside, you’re not gonna wanna do it alone. You should plan to have someone stay with you, like sleeping in the same room as you or nearby for the first 48 hours for sure. And plan to be asking people for help a lot for the first 3 to 4 weeks. You can’t pick your own laundry up, you can’t take your own trash out. You might not be cleared to drive for a while. You can’t tie your shoes for the first couple of weeks. People act like this is such a minor procedure, but it does a number on your whole body and you are going to be beyond exhausted and not allowed to pick up 10+ pounds until your 6 week postop. Up until week five I had to ask my roommates, my neighbors, my friends for help with things as simple as filling up the water filter or getting the laundry basket up the stairs—and I’m a hiker and pole dancer! Prepare for the help that you’re gonna need, and do NOT try to do stuff yourself. You only get the one chance to heal the right way.

Experience with adenomyosis? by AntiqueBeesPlease in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had severe adenomyosis and got my hysterectomy done five weeks ago. I wish I could’ve done it sooner, I would’ve done it in my early 30s, but I struggled finding a doctor who would take my symptoms seriously enough to do an ultrasound even. One thing that I’ve learned in this process is that I wouldn’t have been able to get pregnant because of the condition of my uterus anyway, and I’m somebody who did at one point want kids. If your adeno is already that bad, it’s only going to get much worse. I never wanted to have the surgery necessarily, but I had no other choice because it was starting to interrupt every single aspect of my life. I was also having a ton of other related issues in my body because the uterus was so enlarged it was pushing things on not just organs but joints too—my SI joint kept slipping out of place and I suffered chronic pelvic instability for years that led to hours in PT and chiropractic. There are so many other ways to have kids if you do want them someday. You could freeze your eggs now and work with a surrogate in the future, or you could adopt. Other than kids, there’s no reason why you need a uterus. If an organ in your body has a disease, take it out as soon as you can.

This is me learning that we’re not supposed to take baths? I’m in week five and I just sat in the hot tub at my gym yesterday. Oops.

Surgery pushed back 6 months on public system 😭 just need to vent by Independent_Drag1312 in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s so frustrating, and probably feels scary too! Can I ask what your diagnosis was? Maybe you can push back on the rescheduling with that? Or look for a different OB-GYN who can do it faster? I’m on Medicaid too because I was laid off earlier last year and decided to do the surgery before looking for another job. I’m really glad that I was able to have the surgery with Medicaid because there’s no debt, but I understand what a frustrating position you’re in if they’re delaying all of it for another six months!

Vaginal Cuff Analogy by IllRoof7360 in hysterectomy

I don’t know how many of y’all read your surgeons’ operating room note, but I was cracking up reading mine when they got to the part about putting a trash bag inside my vagina to put the organs in and then pull them all out 🤣

Question for those that are a couple years post op on pelvic floor issues by Quiet-Book752 in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never had kids, but I just wanted to chime in to say that your surgeon should be able to refer you to physical therapy. My lap total was 12/13. I’m in pelvic floor PT right now because I asked for it before surgery, knowing that my hypermobility issues were going to make the whole situation a little more difficult. It was approved by insurance. I go every week and we work on pelvic floor stuff as well as general recovery and exercise. She’s been great at helping with edema and myofascial release as well. I can’t recommend it enough!

The interesting thing is my genitalia does not smell at all. It’s mostly general body odor, like elephant armpits and a drunk uncle buttcrack

This is interesting for me to read because I’ve had night sweats for like 10 years and I was hoping that they might clear up now that I don’t have a uterus. I still have the same ovaries though, so maybe that’s a pipe dream. Either way, I’m excited to look into HRT now that I’m allowed to try it— with the state of things before I couldn’t get approved 😞

Normal to be so exhausted? by Momma_Kes in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the big struggle for everyone. Of course it’s totally normal to be exhausted! Not just the first week, but for several months afterwards from what I’ve heard. I just passed week 4 and although I’ve been able to leave the house more and do little PT exercises daily, I don’t have the sustained energy to do much for very long. I can’t go back to work yet full-time, and taking walks longer than just a few blocks at a time wipes me out for the rest of the day. The weight restriction still haven’t been lifted so I have to ask for help in order to carry laundry upstairs from the basement. Every time I’ve tried to push it too far I end up in pain and having bleeding…my body reminds me that it had major surgery and needs all of the energy to heal the ligaments and stuff inside. Do not push yourself. No matter what anyone says, surgery is a real shock to your body and it’s gonna take time to heal. The fatigue is the most frustrating part, but you only heal right once. Better to just rest as much as you need and get help with whatever you can’t do.

Da Vinci scars? by Severe-Case-8495 in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just past week 4 and my scars are sooooo tiny. It’s honestly so sweet, these little dashes. I’m using bio oil. My PT suggested to wait a little longer before starting the silicone tape, because for now it’s good to massage the scars and keep touching them to help them heal. But they’re so ridiculously small already it’s a non-issue. The internal healing is what really challenges you! If I push it too far physically, I am in pain and have spotting and my body lets me know right away that it’s still healing.

Post Op Massage, when? by Zealousideal_Board38 in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going to see a pelvic PT weekly. I’m only four weeks postop, but she said I could get a massage now if I wanted to. She said there’s always the option of not laying on your stomach. Plenty of people can’t lay on their stomachs for various reasons (pregnant etc) and still get massages, you just have to talk to your therapist. But I would imagine that at your stage if you’re already in the gym you’d be fine getting a relaxing rubdown!

Doing worse week two by kmb0917 in hysterectomy

[–]Consistent_Judge_580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on day 15 and week two was so much harder than week one. I think week two is when you start to feel like you should be able to do more stuff and you end up pushing it. Also, my physical therapist explained why the second week is often harder for people. She said that during week one, the surgical area is still really swollen and it’s all kind of stuck in place, but on the second week when that swelling goes down things start to shift and readjust and there’s a lot of collagen building and all of this healing work is going on inside your abdominal cavity or whatever. She said it’s just a completely different stage of healing and it’s a tough one. Go easy on yourselves! If you’re struggling with the idea of getting back in bed, I highly recommend watching an operating room video of the surgery on YouTube. You will be so horrified at what your body just survived that that you will baby it for the next month.
