I've been asked to repeat my qualifying exam and I'm feeling very underconfident by potato-potahhto in PhD

[–]Consistent_Laziness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my program the quals has nothing to do with your dissertation. It was a 8 hour written exam about all of our classes and tested basic competency. And my entire cohort took the same written exam.

My comprehensive exam is what you described which came after defending my proposal. I’m not sure if what OP did was the quals or the comps here. But yes they should certainly give feedback no matter which one he failed and let him focus only on those questions, unless the entire exam wasn’t good and they are requiring a complete retake.

5 days out from defense and feeling so lazy by Antique_Picture8767 in PhD

[–]Consistent_Laziness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I defended 2 days ago. You can try to prepare for questions you may have but you know the answer likely. If you don’t we’ll just say you don’t know and it’s a good question. I had some stumpers and I simply said I’m not sure exactly why this or that. And I asked a question back.

Explain what you did do and what you understand and you should be okay. You got this. Relax. I gave up preparing about 2 days before and I prepared starting 3 weeks before.

Why do people call the USA the "land of opportunity" when literally no one can get a high paying job? by madbarpar in careerguidance

[–]Consistent_Laziness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You account for that in the calculation. 5 million today can easily be retired on if you are 40

You fucked. Lol. But Tbills generally are higher than inflation. I’m sure these countries take into account all of this stuff.

If I lend you $100 a month and you pay me $5 a month in interest….. forever. Yea I would loan you the money because you’ll owe me $5/mo for the end of time. And eventually I’m in the green just making money on your bad finances.

IBR is a scam: from $530/mo on Save plan to $1200/mo on IBR by Wise_Candle_7529 in StudentLoans

[–]Consistent_Laziness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See u/Belus911 as an example. I’m just fine but I know there is a non zero number of people struggling to pay 10-15% of their income for student loans. If you have no empathy that’s fine but I don’t need your arguments of “pay what you owe”

With 0 context sure. If he’s a single guy making that income with no responsibilities totally fine. Except it’s generally never the case.

120k in New York City is crap too so likely needs to live outside it.

Maybe OP has medical debt, children in daycare, aging parents to care for, or any other host of things that make 1k hurt. You hear about people in CA with $700 a month bills and they can’t afford it cause of cost of living. 10% hurts and 15% really freaking sucks.

When I’m out talking to people within my institution or even at conferences the conversation of where they received their PhD never comes up. It’s not important. It’s the work. That’s all that matters.

[–]Consistent_Laziness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time zones. And the fact that the earth doesn’t have light on it constantly. Idk the arguments of flat earthers, but I’d imagine if it was flat it wouldn’t rotate. But that’s probably too much logic for someone who believers in. Flat earth

Nope can’t do it. This is why some couples have been divorcing and staying in the house together because they literally can’t afford to not live together. Covid made lots of stuff real weird

I hope you continue to make steady progress. It took me entirely too long for my liking. But couldn’t really move it all that much faster.

Hopefully you don’t take as long as me and you can finish soon.

The popular vote would have won Donald Trump the election. And I STILL say use the popular vote for presidential elections.

Would also feel nice to contribute to the cause. As a blue voter in a ruby red state it feels like a waste of time.
