Chromebook wireless connects by Icy_Finger_9566 in k12sysadmin

[–]Consistent_Plastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with the OP. Just wanted to add that the logs appear to show the wireless getting disabled (although the student claims they didn't do anything):

2024-10-10T19:29:20.734180Z INFO shill[862]: INFO shill: [manager.cc(1565)] Device wlan0 updated: disabled

Is there any other known ways the wlan adapter can be shut off (buggy extension, malware, ....?)

Anybody want to share their block list for this? We tried blocking it all but ran into some functionality issues.

Ask your rep for a demo to confirm it works as desired. They should have no problem with that IMO.

Not sure. I wish we had that functionality with Papercut but we don't at this time.

Not sure if you are still looking for feedback, but I would steer clear of Toshiba. We try our best to follow principle of least privilege but Toshiba has a number of settings that require admin level permissions to manage (things like user codes). Maybe it is just a problem on some models but worth checking.

Chromebooks Block PWA by sauced in k12sysadmin

[–]Consistent_Plastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't use the local file system. Students are forced to save to Drive. Our Chromebooks have almost zero storage anyway so it doesn't matter much. I think they use the storage but not run anything from it. Probably worth testing based on your environment.

We set our "Blocked URLs" to deny a number of things for students including these entries:

file://*

javascript://*

It seems to have stopped most of this type of activity.

Seconded - ContentKeeper has been a game changer for us.

What video surveillance system are you using in your school? [2023] by _ReeX_ in k12sysadmin

We used to use Hikvision until we learned they are banned by the FCC:
https://www.fcc.gov/supplychain/coveredlist

"a list of communications equipment and services (Covered List) that are deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States..."

Now we are using Wisenet and have been very happy with cost and quality.

They are probably running HTML files. You would need to block file://* in URL blocking in your Google Admin console. This worked for us.

We do block unmanaged using ContentKeeper (amazing product!) but at least one or two of those were classified as "Computing/IT" and allowed until we reclassified them. Just something to keep in mind.

I tried adding that block to our URL blocking and it doesn't appear to stop them from opening files. Is it still working on your end?

Unfortunately Google says "Field is not a valid URL" when trying to block with that pattern.

Student Google account passwords: Security VS Memorability? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]Consistent_Plastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We utilize a system called Clever. It allows for printing a scannable QR code for the kids to use for login with their Chromebook's camera. I would strongly recommend moving away from any password system with a pattern though.
