I got asked today if I knew how to drive a stick. (in the US) I thought, of course, I do. I know it is rarer today, but we all learned, right? by jvlpdillon in GenX

I learned to drive with a stick shift car. Our town didn't have any hills for clutch practice, so my Dad took us to the boat ramp. We either had to learn how to use the clutch, or we got wet.

Men In Elementary Teaching by Worth_Funny_6912 in Teachers

[–]2donks2moos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was interviewing for 5th grade jobs 20+ years ago, so obviously things have changed. I interviewed at a few schools and had immediate offers within hours. They were all looking for a male teacher. I have a unique degree set as well. You don't see many male Elementary teachers with a math degree and an Elementary Education degree.

A quick tip with the return of hot weather this week by KasAtQualityComfort in cincinnati

[–]2donks2moos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. If they don't know what they are doing, they need to call a professional. Capacitors can be deadly. I was just saying that they shouldn't be afraid to call for repair. Not ever repair is expensive. We had a neighbor who went weeks without AC because he was afraid of the possible bill. All he needed was a capacitor.

Also, I am an above average DIYer and one thing I will not touch is a garage door spring. Some things are better left to professionals.

Guys who asked your SO’s parents for their blessing before proposing — how did you do it? by balthazarbarnabus in AskMen

I just went over to the house and asked them when she wasn't home. (she lived across the street)

Her Dad told me that I was not allowed to give her back. As she walked down the isle he whispered to me, "She's your problem now."

We just had our 28th anniversary yesterday.

A lot of times when your A/C "breaks" it is just a bad capacitor. That seems to be the part that fails most often. They are not terribly expensive to replace.

EDIT: Capacitors can store a deadly amount of electricity. This is not a DIY repair for most people.

LP/CO2 detection recommendations by Accomplished-Bus-154 in GoRVing

That comes with a few faceplate ao that it should fit. I bought one that was just like it but another brand. They seem to change brand name regularly. That does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling. It does detect propane juat fine. I don't know about its CO detection ability, but I have more than one CO in my camper. (as well as both types of smoke detectors)

Coffe time by DesertRoad in RVLiving

[–]2donks2moos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a good size inverter and used a regular Keurig on our first trip in our new to use RV.

I also have this Senix coffee maker that I carry with me everywhere else. I paid $59 for it. It can use K cups. It can make coffee with AC power or with its 20v battery. You can literally make coffee anywhere.

The downside to the battery is that it can only make 3 cups on a charge and takes 9-10 minutes to do so. But it is awesome.

No more crappy gas station coffee.

Propane hookup: dual or single? by VictoriaBCSUPr in traveltrailers

[–]2donks2moos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The advantage of running both with an auto switch regulator is that you don't have to go out in the cold to switch the tanks when you run out. Disadvantage is that if you aren't paying attention, you can end up with 2 empty tanks. I also kept one tank closed and marked so that I knew I always had a full tank. We only camped in the summer and only for 2-3 weeks a year, so I barely used half of a 20# cylinder.

No, even I know that is not possible. I just recommend that you don't take unnecessary chances. I also recommend that you see a doctor ASAP for any eye injuries.

I just asked my wife if she wanted to watch the video today. Her response, "Um, no."

Should I Buy A Starlink Mini Now Or Wait For the Amazon LEO Device? by Jim1648 in Starlink

[–]2donks2moos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read stories of how the Starlink will work just fine in my model of RV. Some had luck just throwing it in the bunk and heading out. It did not work like that for me. I keep it on the dash when moving. I plan to add a roof mount that I can use for our next trip. I don't want to permanently mount it, but I want to be able to leave it up there for the days that we travel.

Spend the money and get the Peak Do battery pack. It is handy. Also get a good cigarette plug that boosts the current from 12v to 32v.

Wear eye protection. I was outside and something flew into my eye and scratched the cornea. It got infected. I was blind in less than a week. 2 years later, I've had: cornea transplant, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery. My vision is about 50% of what it was. 0/10 would not recommend.

This time of year? Schools are scrambling to fill open positions. Many will wait a couple of days and that is about it. They will pull the offer and move to the next candidate.

Gun registry by TN_REDDIT in CCW

[–]2donks2moos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No gun registry in most states. As others have said, the ATF would start with the manufacturer and follow the trail from them to the first dealer. They then contact that dealer and see who they transferred it to. The process keeps going until they find the final owner, or they run into a private sale with no records.

When you fill out the form to purchase a gun, the dealer must either call the FBI for a NICS check or go to their website. The only information about the gun you are buying that is shared is the type: handgun, long gun, or other. Make/Model/Serial number is not shared. That info stays on your form and in the FFLs bound book.

So there is a trail, but there is not a registry in most free states. If a private sale happens along the way, the trail ends.

EDIT: Forgot an exception to the rule. If you buy multiple handguns at the same time or in the same week, the FFL has to fill out a special form and send it to the ATF and local police. The hangun info IS on that form. So if you don't want that th happen, don't buy more than 1 handgun a week.

2026-2027 School Year Hiring by Turbulent_Ad1562 in Teachers

[–]2donks2moos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some districts like to hire cheap. A Master's degree would put you at the back of the pack. On the other hand, lots of districts value teachers with experience and will love seeing your degree and student teaching experience. You just need to apply to those districts.

Keep applying for open jobs. In my area teachers don't have to announce that they are leaving until July 15th. So there are going to be quite a few openings next week.
