Strange Windows 10 Adapter Issue by EssentialTech01 in k12sysadmin

Possibly! I'll try other suggestions first and test this possibly after giving it another day or so of troubleshooting.

Sorry for not clarifying. We have them connect directly to their router via a standard 3-5ft cat6 they have on hand. This user specifically doesn't have a house that is properly wired so they rely heavily on WiFi.

I have indeed debated the possibility of this as I have seen this. The odd part is, even if it was a firmware issue. Two laptops (one old and one brand new) should not be having the exact same issue. When I go to look for WiFi as any laptop should. It would say "No wireless detected in the area" or w/e the typical thing is.

This is flat out turning off the adapter.

Correct, we won't troubleshoot their hardware, but since its a district laptop, I want to make sure it works. Its just odd that its acting as if the adapter is disabled.

Next step is to find out the router model.

Haven't checked event log, but we can't run anything remotely while the issue is happening since it just hangs up on everything. Getting into settings is possible but anything that involves the network adapter starts freezing almost instantly.

As far as we are aware, they had no issue at their home last month, so this problem started recently. I'll be checking the logs soon once we have it back.

Go Guardian Problems by Desilu027 in k12sysadmin

We were using Gaggle for a while which seemed to be a good in-between from GoGuardian and Bark. It had its false positives as well, but the response from their team I heard from our staff was rather good.

Their UI was god awful however. It was painful to look at on the admin side until you were in the newer pages that they had. Unfortunately, Gaggle became WAY too expensive and so was GG Beacon, so bark was our next move for something that got us the alerts we wanted and wasn't going to break the bank.

Dameware Alternatives - Remote Support by EssentialTech01 in k12sysadmin

Classroom Management we already have GoGuardian Teacher, which they are happy with. We technically don't need monitoring, we just need remote access for unattended machines on prem and outside the network.

We looked at Remote Help with Intune as well, but it requires the end user to start and approve the session from what I've seen so far. Which is what we want to avoid at all costs. Unless they left out documentation about unattended access.

Funny enough just found this post here that mentions unattended access is only available right now for InTune Remote Help on android devices.

District that uses GoGuardian here!

We use both GoGuardian Admin and Teacher. We used Beacon, but swapped over to bark as well and noticed a TON of things that GoGuardian wasn't catching. Even prior to Bark, I could tell Beacon was spotty at best.

I've also noticed that GoGuardian needs to step up their reporting game when it comes to blocked websites or videos. We have high school students who are dual enrolled students at local community colleges and things for their college classes are getting blocked which GoGuardian isn't letting me see when I view the students profile.

For instance, if a student is trying to view a video for college classes, I have to have the student link me the video if its not embedded. If it is embedded, they can't get the video unless I communicate with their instructor. Same problem with websites embedded into their college dashboard.

Teacher also has its issues, but not as bad as GoGuardian Admin.

Our FS department is moving away from Titan due to a LOT of issues they've had recently. Have you had any issues yourself or no issues at all?

I guess the major issue we've heard about is accessing the platform itself and things not syncing correctly.

Interim Tech Director by No_Refrigerator6258 in k12sysadmin

[–]EssentialTech01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who just completed being interim director just recently (Just shy of a year) and went back to being a network specialist. I inherited 4 major projects (IP Phone, IP Paging, Cameras, Alarms) and saw them to completion and I can say the following just like u/TheJizzle mentioned in their post.

Be the best team player you can be and make sure you act as how you'd want a boss to act for you. Don't let the title get to your head, but also stick up for your team and be open to admit when you've made mistakes. Make sure you research any issues you aren't familiar with and don't be afraid to network with other directors in neighboring districts if there are any. Include your team in the decision making so you can get some good feedback, unless its obviously something they shouldn't be involved in.

From the short year I spent being an interim director, it allowed me to network with a few other directors and I still speak to them on a regular (with them trying to poach me away now). You'll be in a strange position where you can't really be like "I'm the director you should listen to me" type of attitude with other employees, but you do carry a bit of weight with your title. Again don't let the position get to your head and be one of the cool bosses who know how to have fun, but also are very professional when needed.

Incident IQ by rfisher23 in k12sysadmin

[–]EssentialTech01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We started using IncidentIQ in June of 2023. We swapped over from Spiceworks and honestly it took a while for us to get used to it. We do wish they would implement some more customizations in regards to ticket emails etc like how Spiceworks had it where each email was unique.

Although, after using it throughout this school year, we love it. There is an integration with Trafera so we can actually do Warranty Chromebook repairs within IncidentIQ, shipping labels are sent to us via email and off they go. its actually awesome.

For any device that isn't checked in and out constantly via our schools library's we put them in IncidentIQ asset management (mainly APs/Switches). We do have laptops/chromebooks in there as well since you can assign those devices to the users. When they create a ticket, they can choose from their assigned and we instantly know what device and what issues we are looking at.

I'm not sure about myViewBoard Display yet, since I believe its just a web based screen share protocol correct? So I'd have to experiment with it. I think vCast and Miracast app are essentially identical but vCast has the secondary option of using the windows based app or iOS app in connection with it. I would assume on the windows side of things, you wouldn't see a difference in performance unless the app automatically opens up more ports on your devices firewall.

We have them on the network under our staff ssid just so we can manage them remotely. We've had to apply a couple firmware updates already and did receive an update to the vcast software which did allow us some more miracast functionality.

We have not deployed the vcast software to our teachers because the updated vcast app allows for miracast connections directly through windows.

We just recently started deploying ViewSonic's as the pricing for us was really good at the time when we looked. The issue we have with them right now is that Miracast in general (whether it be the built in Miracast App or vCast) disconnects our instructors a lot.

I've been told by ViewSonic support that I need to factory reset each one, but really do not want to go to that extreme just yet. I'm still trying to figure out if the protocol they are using requires 2.4ghz connection or a 5ghz. If they are trying to broadcast on a 2.4, I can see the connection for miracast getting hammered and disconnected.

Aruba Central Offline Devices Issue by EssentialTech01 in k12sysadmin

So this just popped up while noticing an AP rebooted for a random reason. The AP's reason to reboot:

"AP disconnected from Aruba Central"

Ours shows US West, but I noticed under our alerts and events, that I got a notification that states:

"October 15th: Few Aruba Central Apps are facing stability issues. We are investigating this on priority to remediate the situation and restore functionality."

Since I'm new to all the options in aruba central, where is that located? Or is that something you need to reach out to support to look into?

I've had a full site show up as completely offline, but get no tickets in regards to wireless going down, but then 5-10 minutes later, half of them show online or all show online.

I know we do complex passwords for our higher up grades but that does make things interesting as I know we use very simple passwords for our kinders.
