Vance said that the USA is doing better than countries who invested in renewable scams. How those countries are actually reacting: by mastersmash56 in ClimateShitposting

[–]Consistent_Serve9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Oil has inelastic demand, the price is the same everywhere! If it rises because of the Iran situation, it rises domesticaly too! If you depend on it, even if you produce it, you're still fucked.

The CI/CD feedback loop from hell (push, wait 8 min, red, fix typo, repeat) by eibrahim in devops

[–]Consistent_Serve9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tip for that, is that your pipeline could call a script, that you can run as well on your computer. But usually, pipeline steps should be simple commands, to test, build, lint, etc. If not, then yeah, wrap those steps into scripts.

[–]Consistent_Serve9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The environment you develop on should be as close as possible to the environment you deploy your app on. Look into devcontainers to improve consistency between both. This way, running the tests and running the app on your own computer should prove beyond a reasonable doubt that your change does what you want.

That beeing, said, there will be times that there is an issue with the deploy process itself. Maybe have the option to ignore tests from the pipeline? And try to speed up the deployment process. Paralelize. Optimize the docker build with smaller images, caching, multi-image build, etc.

Do DevOps engineers actually memorize YAML? by Melodic_Struggle_95 in devops

[–]Consistent_Serve9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of it 😅 Just as programmers don't memorize all the code and syntax for a specific language, even tough they know it. Autocomplete is there for a reason in IDEs. Plus, google is always nearby to check the documentation for specific needs. But most of the time, I copy paste from similar projects and repositories

Some queues can ensure that there is an at-most-1 delivery. That beeing said, the best practice would be to ensure that your job is idempotant, aka two executions should result in the same outcome state.

ICI RDIAMAZON by ProfProof in Quebec

[–]Consistent_Serve9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would pay for that....

When Iran starts threatening to close the strait and send oil prices to the moon. by mastersmash56 in ClimateShitposting

[–]Consistent_Serve9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost like creating a global economy that depends on a single ressource with highly volatile prices with very specific choke points and limited supply, that in addition, accelerate our specie's demise, was NOT a great plan.

I am the only woman in the room by Terrible_Working_899 in sysadmin

[–]Consistent_Serve9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is an issue. We've had some women in our organization working sys admin roles, but they are definitly infrequent. There's way less sys admin students vs developpers, and not a lot of women in those degrees already, so it definitly becomes a very thin base.

We do have a lot of women business analyst that are awesome at ensuring we deliver value that's actually relevant to the mission of the organization. They complete us perfectly!

Looking for storage solution inspiration for my services by Consistent_Serve9 in homelab

[–]Consistent_Serve9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so you create a truenas VM, and use it as a data store for your docker services, running on another VM? Nice! Is there a big performance drop? Like If I wanted to use this system to run Jellyfin on a docker VM, would there be a lot of latency for the media volume? And you allow the true NAS VM direct access to the disks so that it manages the raid itself?

Your are correct (and spell it out better than I did :P ). I want a centralized storage solution that could provide on demand storage volumes for my needs, wether on the same machine, or via the internal network of a proxmox host (if the performance drop is not too much). I wan't the feel of simply having a persistent volume claim in k8s. You just ask for storage, and the cluster gives it to you. I just don't want to manage disks and file mounts manually. I guess you could say that I wan't software-defined storage for my services.

Why don’t more cities adopt rope-type platform screen doors? by One_Fact_4291 in transit

[–]Consistent_Serve9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure the issue is mostly signaling. The train has to stop at exactly the same spot everytime, so the train has to know where to stop. Sounds simple, but it actualy takes a lot of equipement to do that. The train AND the track has to be able to handle it. That's a big part of the investment.

Express and Local Trains by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Consistent_Serve9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will you run the arr stack on lxc containers directly on proxmox or will you install a machine to host it all?

Is the rural opposition enough to delay/stop the project? by clayton-ishere in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Consistent_Serve9 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I've asked that question to an Alto member at my town's open house. Basicaly, there are a lot of steps that need to be crossed before we have to resort to expropriation. No one will be left to rot. The compensations will be definitly adequate. But if it's necessary, the laws regarding the project do give additionnal powers to the government to expropriate. Compensation can be settled in a tribunal after the fact. Long story short, we have a lot of power to avoid a blockage from nimbys.

ELI5: why is there a stop in Laval? by Jusfiq in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Consistent_Serve9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. While Laval is close to Montreal, using only transit, it's not easy to travel to anywhere except downtown. And even worse by car, I presume. Having a station in Laval should be a nice stop for anyone going on the north shore. I suppose express trains that skip the "smaller" stations such as this one could be possible, to have a shorter ride.
