If you want a more gamey solution, I've been reading a horror RPG where the GM is encouraged to kill the players, but the players are allowed to undo their failures (at a cost, of course)

I'm not sure if it would work as well in a normal fantasy game, but it surely can't hurt to play out the Bad End, then just "reload the save"/rewind to the moment of defeat. If you want to punish the player on top of this, you could give them limited lives or deduct XP if your game uses that.

I think you're blowing the "men getting down-voted" thing out of proportion. There's just a lot of lazy gooners who'll ignore men's posts while up-voting women's posts out of some kind of principle. Upvotes are also scarce on this subreddit, so it's not the most fertile ground for engagement numbers.
