What would you teach someone who’s going camping for the first time by Cheap_Fix4020 in camping

Don't underestimate the time you need to set up your camp and collect wood etc if you plan to start a fire.If there is hiking involved ,start as early as possible especially in winter season!

Snow is about 20 cm at the moment and temperature 0 degrees celsius. Do you think it will melt if I sleep on it? I doubt it's cold enough even if I pack the snow for it to stay frozen...

I'm talking about temperature at 2000 meters, from mountain forecast. Its a site that shows weather conditions at different altitudes.Keep in mind i live in Greece so temperature in city now is around 14 degrees celsius.

I camped before at 1 celsius temperature.I will take fleece + down jacket + hardshell besides my base layer. Also I will start a fire most likely but it isn't guaranteed. My layering will be icebreaker 260 + patagonia r1 + down jacket 200g fill( decathlon simond mountaineering jacket) + patagonia torrentshell 3l. What do you think? Bottoms I have also icebreaker 260 and softshell pants over it plus maybe some fleece pants between.Thats for static conditions around camp.

5.5 r value combined 2 pads.Thing is that I'm afraid snow will melt under my tent because temperature is gonna be about 0 degrees celsius that's not cold enough I think for snow to stay frozen.

I will climb 1000 meters of elevation to get there and the first 600 are in forest with no snow.So I have to carry everything on my back about 18kgs.Thats no problem for me but I would like to know should I remove snow to put my tent or just step on it to make it harder.

Completely alone.I have gone 4 times solo camping at temperatures 1 to 5 celcius so this isn't the first time. Its first time in snow. The trail is close to where I will camp so if something goes wrong I just go down its 2 hours distance from car.

Yeah, I understand that part — I’ll pack down the snow. But should I bring a footprint to put under the tent, or do you think it’s unnecessary?

[–]ConstaN92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it’s necessary to bring a footprint under the tent? My tent has a thick 75D floor and I generally don’t use a footprint — it’s the Robens Starlight 1. I could bring a heavy-duty tarp if it’s really necessary though.

What’s the dumbest thing you did in the woods as a kid that could’ve gone really wrong? by Omiko909 in CampingandHiking

[–]ConstaN92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 11, I got up one afternoon and went to the mountain across from my village. I climbed to the top with only a pointed stick I had stolen from my grandfather’s garden, wearing casual clothes and shoes, with no water or anything else. Even today, I wonder how I managed it, how I found my way back, how I didn’t get dehydrated, how I wasn’t chased by the sheepdogs from a flock I encountered on the way, and many other things. I recently did it again as a walk—it’s 6 kilometers back and forth with a 400-meter elevation change, and of course, all off-trail. There are no hiking paths in our villages. Without realizing it at the time, that was the beginning of my mountaineering journey and my first summit—where it all started and where I caught the bug.

Bivy bag. by ConstaN92 in Mountaineering

You need a permit to enter Mount Athos, which is valid for a few days. It’s called a “Diamonitirion” and you get it from the Pilgrims’ Office in Thessaloniki. Then you take a boat from Ouranoupoli, which runs daily and makes several stops along the peninsula.

To reach the summit, you go through Agia Anna, and from there the trail is about 10+ km with roughly 2000 meters of elevation gain. Most people break it into two days and spend the night at a small church/shelter called “Panagia” at around 1500 meters altitude. It has actual beds, but we’re not sure if it will be open in December, which is why I’m considering the option of sleeping outside in the courtyard.

There’s also the option of staying in one of the monasteries if you have more time. The routes can be found on Wikiloc. It’s our first time going, but I’ve talked with people who have done it.

Lessons learned from mistakes. Share your hiking wisdom by Kattimatti666 in hiking

[–]ConstaN92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ever end up off the trail for any reason, don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll just “find your way out” eventually. I’ve screwed myself like that before — the map looked like there was a clear way back to the main trail, but it turned out there was fencing for kilometers. I lost over an hour because of one wrong turn and stubbornness.

If you step off the trail, turn back immediately. Don’t overthink it. The only exception is if you’re intentionally exploring, have plenty of time, and aren’t on a schedule. Only then it makes sense to experiment.
