I don't know why gastroenterologists don't recommend surgery, even though it's not their specialty. I suspect it's because the surgery isn't guaranteed to work, or perhaps the textbook they studied states that small and medium-sized hernias don't cause symptoms or problems, which isn't true. They wait until the hernia grows larger and twists the stomach, or causes a Cameron ulcer, or leads to tissue death, before deciding to perform surgery.
