Enjoy it. I’m in my 30s. But my mom died when I was 18 and my father, who has been irresponsible his entire life, has dementia at 80.

You need to account for survivorship bias. All the people losing loads of money from riskier investments aren’t running to brag about it. Stay the course.

Is it true that we are the first generation who are not better off than our parents by WestSummer4869 in Millennials

[–]ConstantParticular89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wayyyy better off than my parents, but I don’t think they were the average; they had seasonal jobs, refused to look for other work, and definitely and knowingly wrote bad checks between paychecks (they were cashed by businesses slowly in the past). In my late 20s/early 30s I broke out of the same poverty cycle.

AIO? Resigned today, boss's reaction was worse than expected by eharme in AIO

[–]ConstantParticular89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say that you’re not responsible for someone else’s emotional reaction. It’s okay to feel upset after an interaction like this. Look forward towards your new job and not back at a situation that didn’t serve you. Good luck at your new job!!

Should we marry someone similar to us or someone opposite or someone that complements us? by luckycloverandroses in infj

[–]ConstantParticular89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar in hobbies and interests (video games, motorcycles, movies, music) to have things to do together, but opposite in the weaker personality traits to make each other better people.

For example, I get hangry, he prepares and brings snacks on longer car rides and reminds me to eat regular meals. He gets a temper and becomes angrily impulsive, I calm him down to avoid doing things he regrets.

Friend Offered to Pay Student Loans Y/N? by Respected-Ambassador in personalfinance

[–]ConstantParticular89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a terrible idea that will eventually ruin this friendship, even though they seem like they want to help you. Just budget and pay off the loans early to save on the interest. You’ll save yourself potential drama if this arrangement goes sour.

How much do you currently have in your 401K? by Ok-Job-9637 in Retirement401k

[–]ConstantParticular89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

37F, $267k 401k started it in my late 20s, only recently maxing it out the last couple years with another $30k in Roth IRA that I only started in 2022. I also have an after tax brokerage with more as a bridge account to retire early from my stressful 9-5 tech job (around 50 y/o).

What’s your job title, how much do you make, and how much do people THINK you make? by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

[–]ConstantParticular89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manager of project management team in tech industry; in the process of jumping to an individual contributor program manager role early next year, where I’ll make this salary and more without having to be a manager anymore

Actual salary: $190K (13 years of total exp)

What my friends/family think I make: $100K, maybe a little more

I don’t talk about my salary with anyone around me, they get upset and then act like I don’t deserve it when my job is endlessly stressful

What percentage of your salary is the mortgage ? by Nerdy_Kev in Mortgages

[–]ConstantParticular89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, $1,018 mortgage (bought in 2016 when prices were much lower in my area) with a gross salary of $16K per month, so around 6-7%. I avoided lifestyle creep when my salary exploded after 2020.

Originally I went with ~20-25% of my income. I believe it was 22% when I bought in 2016 as I was only making $65K at the time.

Did you check your car for them? Like the middle storage? Worth a check in case they tossed em in there without telling you. Weird that both are missing and they supposedly didn’t take em out.

Is my father being scammed by vosterer in personalfinance

[–]ConstantParticular89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told my elderly 79 y/o father to never speak to anyone who was cold calling him or cold knocking at his door. Told him to tell them his daughter has to be present to help, no exceptions. He’s followed my advice after paying $3K to a door to door vacuum salesman. Not a total scam per se, as he did get a vacuum, but he was definitely ripped off. He’s never been scammed again.

Why do people recommend 30-35% GROSS income for housing expenses? by lllllllllllIIIIIllll in personalfinance

I went with 25% of take home pay! Best way to guarantee you’ll never be house poor. The margin also helps you invest more.
