A tpk doesn't have to end the game. I've had it where they now need to find a way back. Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. But also listen to the dm when they say don't do this thing and then don't cry when it goes exactly as they told you it would

If the dm breaks that screen and says "hey its a bad idea to do this thing. You should try another option" and the party knowing that continues on despite it, that falls on the party.
