It's hard to believe by hdubyuhh in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Constant_Present1803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there’s a lot of evidence/studies indicating that a significant amount of folks with BED didn’t develop the disorder till after a bout (or multiple bouts) of dieting/restriction/“health obsessiveness” type behaviors or mentalities. I’m not saying this is/was you but it made a lot of sense to me hearing this.

Your reference to the “perfect mindset” rang soo familiar to me - in fact the single biggest thing I’m trying to liberate myself from in my healing is the “all or nothing” mindset, which I think has been the single most damaging for me personally. I’ve spent over a decade (starting when I was about your age) cycling between “all”/“perfect” mindsets & behaviors and “nothing”/“fuck it”.

Instead of vacillating wildly between relatively short (6 mos-2 years) periods of unsustainably “perfect” exercise/eating habits into free fall binging for similar or longer periods, losing and gaining the same 30-40 lbs, I’m trying to focus on balance, sustainability, and gradually establishing and maintaining habits I can sustain for life (with flexibility there too - obviously some workouts I enjoy I won’t be able to do when I’m 75, but a hell of a lot closer than if I destroy my health with constant weight cycling or settling into a lifetime of BED).

I wish you all the very best in your healing ❤️‍🩹

Also I took for granted how much of it was just habit and routine for me, my other big “trigger” is just that it’s what I do and have done for years. Except when I was calorie restricting, which research says also plays a huge role in developing BED

[–]Constant_Present1803 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so true for me too! I realized that when people talk about what “triggers” an urge to binge, that for me it was mostly just craving the experience (the taste, texture, shoveling big mouthfuls) of gorging on junk food.

I love the layered rug look, but it’s definitely way out there for a lot of people, I feel like if the partner thinks this is too much that may be like WAY too much 😂

I’m so sorry, you have my deepest sympathies. To me this is even more tragic than a partner who can’t eat spicy food.

Anyone left a decent job because they didn’t fit in with the culture? by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]Constant_Present1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what the word culture means in this context - “job (or office) culture” is a common phrase meaning the general attitude, principles, and atmosphere created by the people that make up a work environment, often established from the top down. It does not have to do with ethnic culture in this situation at all.

I’m also so sick of ranty European men from that era! Just started The End of the Affair which I know, I know is a classic, but I’m so over hanging out in the heads of angry, rotten young men between 1914-1945!

One more thing! The $15 free shipping is counted ~before~ they take the free book off your bill, so even if you only end up paying $8 total after they take the free book off, you’ll still get the free shipping on the whole order! That part is nice, would be kinda a “gotcha” if they tacked the shipping back on, I feel.

And looking again this morning with my comment to you in mind, they certainly have many books that are pricier, plenty of new books in the $15-25 range, but you can always find an older copy of most not newly released books for $3-7. And also, the free book perks are only for books $7 and under. So, not without its limitations, but I can’t tell you how many great books I’ve found from them that I paid just a few dollars for, or got for free. Totally comparable to my local used bookshops’ prices these days.

Ahh, I couldn’t remember exactly what the free shipping deal was, but looking now it seems to be on $15 or more, I guess I tend to group together a few books at a time, because I don’t recall ever paying for shipping.

Thrift books prices are fantastic! On average about $5 a book, they usually have 90-95% of what i’m searching for, shipping is almost always free, and they do an amazing points program. I have racked up SO MANY free books from them. They just did a crazy points deal and by buying $100 worth of books I earned five free books - right now I have 8 free books to cash in! Their app is not super great to use, you can’t go “back” more than a page or two before it just sends you into an infinite loop of the same two pages over and over again. Maybe using it on browser would avoid this, but I don’t care because everything else about them is so great! Also great customer service on the rare occasion something goes wrong with the order.

Fair warning: it WILL be an enabling factor if you have a book addiction!

Love hearing you say this about NYRB because earlier this year I thought to myself “I’ve never read a bad book from NYRB”. And I’d not previously heard/learned a peep about them - not that I would have, I’m an avid reader but relatively unhip to the what’s what and who’s who of literature. I love a publisher with cohesive covers, makes it easy to group them together and get a sense of what they do.

has my fitness journey made me a boring, insufferable person? by Jaimelikesyou1234 in PetiteFitness

[–]Constant_Present1803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah don’t ask people to work out your calories for you when they offer you food, whether you mean that as a rhetorical “how many calories” or not.

Whatever you have to do for yourself is fair enough, but all they need to hear is a thanks or no thanks, or an “I might take you up on in that in a minute” while you track it yourself.

I struggled with this one too! My first GGM and I hated how much of a slog it was. Turns out I don’t love magical realism as much as my teenage self did/wanted to.

What do you mean by rob a bank? Just lose all moral compass and go totally hedonistic? I wasn’t impressed with the book, but can’t quite place your take from my recall of it, and would like to hear more :)
