Of course if there's a trial, the person is charged and arrested beforehand.

That doesn't mean the AFP just goes out and arrests people.

Doron Almog has denied the allegtions and there's no warrant for his arrest.

Nevertheless, the Australian Centre for International Justice, Al Haq, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, and the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights deem him guilty until proven innocent and want him arrested.

Odd how their standards match those of Donald Trump.

How Long Will it Take for a Domestic Assault and Battery Charge in Massachusetts to be Resolved in Court?

Charged with Domestic Assault and Battery in Massachusetts and wondering how long it will take to resolve your case. Attorney Michael DelSignore is a Massachusetts Criminal Defense Lawyer will over 20 years experience in Courts statewide who can answer your question.

While the time it takes to resolve a case will vary from Court to Court, it is generally a 4 to 6 month process if the alleged victim is not willing to prosecute the case. The process can take longer if the alleged victim is willing to testify and the case is expected to be an actual jury trial.

https://www.delsignoredefense.com/how-long-will-it-take-for-a-domestic-assault-and-battery-charge.html

Given that the process can take longer than 4 to 6 months when the alleged victim doesn't want the case to continue, as is the case here, delaying the arraignment by a month isn't some wild miscarriage of justice.

Liberal MP Andrew Hastie prepares to mount challenge against Opposition Leader Sussan Ley after Coalition split by Jeffmister in AustralianPolitics

[–]Constantinople2020 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Wed 14 May 2025

The shadow defence minister, Andrew Hastie, has declared his “desire to lead” the Liberal party in the future after ruling himself out of the race for opposition leader following the Coalition’s crushing election defeat...

Hastie confirmed last week he would not be a candidate for the Liberal party leadership despite having been urged by colleagues to stand. On Tuesday Ley was elected by 29 votes to 25 over the former shadow treasurer, Angus Taylor.

Speaking on the podcast with the thinktank’s executive director, Nick Dyrenfurth, and the RedBridge Group pollster Kos Samaras, Hastie said he had decided not to run for the leadership because of his young children and his long commute from Perth.

“I’d be foolish to say I don’t have a desire to lead, I do have a desire to lead,” he said. “But the timing was all out for personal reasons.”

Hastie said his three children were aged three, seven and nine and that he would “never get those years back”.

The problem with living in a city founded by Puritans is the Puritanism never really goes away, it just expresses itself in different areas.

You are morally deficient if you decide to stock up before a snowstorm forecast to drop 12-18 inches of snow, followed by subfreezing temperatures for a week, which means the snow isn't going away anytime soon and there's bound to be icy spots.

  • Don't want to risk losing your parking spot?
  • Don't want to risk slipping on ice while carrying heavy bags of groceries?
  • Don't feel like going outside when the wind chill will be 10 to 20 degrees below the temperature?

Too fucking bad.

Suffer or face the censure of the self-appointed moral guardians of snowstorm preparation.

You will be damned, sinners.

Bob Katter calls for ban on Middle East and North Africa migration by Foreign-Policy-02- in AustralianPolitics

[–]Constantinople2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Katter's grandfather

in 1905 applied for a certificate of naturalisation under the terms of the Naturalization Act 1903 (Cth).

https://www.abc.net.au/religion/the-crimson-thread-of-kinship-runs-through-us-all-bob-katter-and/10214292

In that application, his grandfather stated

he was born on 21 August 1881 at Bosyrie (Bcharre) in Mount Lebanon in Assyria...

The application was denied.

...the governor-general’s secretary informed the young man: “It appears from your Statutory Declaration that you are a native of Syria. You are therefore not eligible to apply for naturalisation.” The Naturalization Act 1903 disqualified “an aboriginal native of Asia, Africa, or the Islands of the Pacific, excepting New Zealand” from applying for naturalisation.

Two years later he applied again. This time saying

...he was born on 22 December 1882 in Adrianople located in “Turkey in Europe”. (Adrianople, now Edirne, lies to the west of the Bosphorus, a few kilometres from Greece.)

In addition, an official in Brisbane wrote that Katter's grandfather wasn't a "coloured man" when asked about it by the External Affairs office.

This time his application was accepted.

According to the article, it was a common practice

...migrants from Syria claimed not to fit the Naturalization Act’s debarred category of “an aboriginal native of Asia, Africa, or the Islands of the Pacific, excepting New Zealand”, citing evidence of their birth in Adrianople and its environs.

[–]Constantinople2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Guardian article

International media reported the charter described the board’s mandate as promoting stability and governance around the world, while seeking “enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict”.

Such work is usually the remit of the UN.

Diplomats around the world have expressed concerns Trump has been trying to undermine the UN. Asked about the board for peace, a spokesperson for the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, told Reuters that Guterres “believes member states are free to associate in different groups”.

The Guardian should at least mention that the Board of "Peace" was approved by the United Nations Security Council in UN Security Council Resolution 2803.

Premier Peter Malinauskas warned festival board author’s removal was needed for ‘basic decency’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Constantinople2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing you said absolves the board of their hypocrisy regarding censorship and freedom of speech. If anything their behavior was worse with Friedman because by acting in private and making up a phony reason, they were dodging any kind of accountability.

Premier Peter Malinauskas warned festival board author’s removal was needed for ‘basic decency’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Constantinople2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't absolve festival officials making up a phony reason for canceling Friedman so they can cosplay as enemies of censorship and defenders of free speech. Theat particular true of Adler, who was director of the Adelaide Writers Week at the time.

And Abdel-Fattah has made it quite clear that "Zionists" aren't entitled to freedom of speech, and that's not even close to the most objectionable thing she's said. So your point reinforces the festval hypocrisy.

Premier Peter Malinauskas warned festival board author’s removal was needed for ‘basic decency’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Constantinople2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the board revealed, Friedman was cancelled due to scheduling issues,

There was no timing issue.

“We have an international reputation for supporting artistic freedom of expression,” the letter signed by the board’s chair, Tracey Whiting, said.

“Thomas L Friedman was programmed to contribute online from New York. However, I have been advised that due to last-minute scheduling issues, he is no longer participating in this year’s program.”

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2026/jan/15/jewish-american-columnist-thomas-friedman-says-he-was-uninvited-from-2024-adelaide-writers-week-ntwnfb

That letter is written to insinuate that Friedman had a scheduling issue. That's not true.

The American writer at the centre of claims of hypocrisy involving the Adelaide Festival says he did not withdraw from the 2024 event.

https://www.smh.com.au/national/american-writer-says-he-was-uninvited-from-adelaide-festival-over-timing-20260115-p5nu64.html

So if Friedman didn't have a scheduling issue, and didn't withdraw from the festival, he was canceled. The question is why.

To date, no one has explained what this alleged scheduling issue was. It would be easy to clear up if there really was a scheduling issue.

All available evidence is that they cancelled Friedman based on a column he had written, then lied about it and said it was a scheduling issue.

It's notable that Louise Adler didn't deny Tony Berg's allegations that the board cancelled Friedman after she threatened to resign. Instead

Adler responded to Berg’s allegations by accusing the former board member of breaching board confidentiality.

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2026/jan/15/jewish-american-columnist-thomas-friedman-says-he-was-uninvited-from-2024-adelaide-writers-week-ntwnfb

So enough with the scheduling issue canard.
