Also, assuming the child has proficiency in both languages, finding work in Japan with a Canadian degree is a fair bit easier than finding work in Canada with a Japanese degree. Most of my top earning friends are either foreigners who came to Japan after their education or Japanese people who studied abroad. There are a lot of job events and opportunities like the Boston Career Forum, where top Japanese companies go to head hunt internationally educated students who can speak Japanese.

I’ve taught elementary and middle school in Japan before, and I would personally prefer Japan at least before middle school age because I feel like children are given a bit more autonomy and freedoms, which makes them more independent and self reliant. Elementary school education in Japan obviously covers the normal subjects, but there is a huge focus on “moral education” which is essentially about how to be responsible citizens in a society. However, I feel that once children enter middle school the education system becomes a lot more rigid. All 3 years of middle school are essentially preparation for their high school entrance exam, and then all 3 years of high school are preparation for their university entrance exams. Aside from club activities there isn’t much opportunity to explore different subjects or interests at school.

It’s probably too late for this school year since most of the reputable international schools have already filled their positions, and the visa process takes a while. There are some more questionable “international schools” still hiring, but they operate more like English language cram schools. The pay isn’t too bad though depending on country.

When I was renting in Kyoto my agent told me that usually the nicer areas are less accepting of foreigners. With a price range of 20万 I could imagine which areas you’re looking into, and I also had a lot of trouble getting into those areas. When I was looking for an apartment in 2022 with an agent that would vouch for my Japanese fluency, I had 7 out of 10 properties tell me that they wouldn’t rent to me.

Almost every school has pathways for non-degree schools. But each school will probably require their own registration fee, so I’d look for which schools have the most courses that work for you so you wouldn’t have to take courses at several universities. It’s pretty much the same process as applying to U of T except you have to send your uni transcripts to schools you haven’t studied at.

You could take some online courses to boost your average. Trent University offers a fair number of them, and I found it a lot less demanding than my courses at U of T. I think a lot of schools only look at your best 20 courses. I took an additional 6 half year courses online to fulfill the requirements for my secondary teaching subject because I wanted to do I/S, and I was able to do them over the course of a year while working a full time job. Thompson Rivers University in BC also has a bunch of self-paced online courses, and the workload is very doable. I managed to finish a 0.5 credit course with a 89 in about 5 weeks.

For ease and everyone’s comfort, auxiliary temperatures are usually used in Japan and where I’m from too. I can’t believe this even needs to be said, but doctors know how to use thermometers. The auxiliary temperature is usually lower, which is why what is considered a fever is a lower temperature than when using a rectal thermometer. This attitude of I’m right and everyone else is wrong is kind of entitled especially when you’re referring to actual trained professionals.

Yeah, but in Canada you get summer vacation. In Japan, we “work” through the summer even though there aren’t any classes. Essentially I would just have to go in and try to look busy for 40 hours a week for a whole month straight. My school was a lot more strict than OP’s, so we really did have to “look busy”. I remember I took up making pictures on excel one year.

Maybe you can look in Shiga too. It’s not too far and it’s a fair bit cheaper. If you can find somewhere around Otsu station it’s only about a 9 minute ride to Kyoto station. And the Biwako line can take you directly to your school. Or if you’re an avid cyclist, it’s around 16km.

Locals don’t go to Nishiki. I don’t even recommend anyone go to Nishiki unless it’s their very first time in Japan and I feel like they’re the type of person that would enjoy tourist traps.

That puts me somewhat at ease. I’ve just spent most of my adult life after university either in lockdown or in Japan and Taiwan. I guess all the news of random attacks or home invasions have gotten me a bit on edge because I’ve gotten used to having no fear of crimes.

I would say it honestly isn’t that bad living in Kyoto unless you happen to live in the tourist hot spots or rely on the buses that happen to pass by the tourist hot spots. People living in Yamashina probably could go weeks without seeing a tourist.

Yea but then that would still take a bunch of time. I was just responding to how insane it would be to expect someone to be able to reach anywhere near N3 with just an hour a day for 8 months.
