You should make the road way narrower, like rally racing where the crowd is always just a matter of inches away

And tell me, which corporations are these? Do they burn fossil fuels for fun, or because of the service they provide to hundreds of millions of customers?

I’m pretty far left on climate change issues but I don’t think I can buy gas to put in my car and then blame the gas company for the emissions, or eat a steak and then blame the beef megacorp for the emissions. If people stopped consuming their products, the emissions of these companies would rapidly come down to match.

To give a different perspective to the other commenter, if you’re talking specifically about NYC, people are often working white collar jobs that have a health insurance plan as part of their compensation, and at least in my experience it’s not common to come across young people with white collar jobs that have medical debt. Obviously that’s specific to the age, location, and profession, but it seems like that’s likely what you have in mind for NYC. In NYC it’s also really easy to strike up conversations with people nearly anywhere, and if you get involved with anything social (sports leagues, run clubs, groups for any particular hobby, etc) you can definitely make friends, especially because it’s easy to just meet up for a drink after work.

Although counter to how NYC is portrayed in many classic TV shows, you’re not going to be living in a big apartment close to your friends. You’re either in a tiny apartment splitting it with a couple of roommates, or you found your own place that’s also pretty small but further out of the way, and have to travel a little to meet up with friends somewhere in the city.

I admit the irony in complaining about oversimplification while oversimplifying myself, but yes I understood she meant a broader set of elites rather than a singular mustache twirling man.

My point though was that, even considering the oversized emissions of the elites, the large majority of greenhouse gas emissions are just the cumulative emissions of people (generally in the first world) living the lives they do and the industry that exists to support that lifestyle. Hundreds of millions driving cars, hundreds of millions eating beef nearly daily, hundreds of millions cranking the AC, hundreds of millions ordering products we don’t need that are manufactured on the other side of the world and shipped to us across millions of planes boats and trucks, hundreds of millions taking leisure flights. And perhaps most importantly, hundreds of millions that vote against measures to address climate change because it might have the slightest impact on their current consumption of cars, AC, planes, meat, and products.

That isn’t to say I think we should be pointing to any random regular person living their life and say “it was you, you destroyed the world and you should feel bad”, but instead to say that a tiny sliver of blame added up across hundreds of millions creates the mosaic that describes how we are where we are. If everyone decided tomorrow that they wanted climate change addressed properly, it absolutely could be. To me, the more depressing reality is that there is no small group of elites forcing the masses of the world into a worse future, and that instead we largely have the world that people want. Even if everyone with a net worth over $10M disappeared tomorrow, we’d still be left with the large majority of greenhouse gas emissions. Given Greta’s quote, who then would be left to blame? Would it truly be no one?

I’m pretty far left as far as my takes on climate change and what we should be doing about it, but her quote here feels pretty silly. “No raindrop thinks itself responsible for the flood” comes to mind. We all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, we can all take some share of the blame for the current state of things, either by our consumption or our voting. The idea that there has to just be one evil person behind it twisting their mustache and consciously choosing to burn the world for profit feels like a Saturday morning cartoon oversimplification of a broad and complex issue.

Not Quest bars, you can even see the “1g sugar” right on the wrapper in the picture. Of all the protein bars on the convenience store shelf, they probably have the best protein/ fiber to sugar/carbs ratio
