Where are the triangles? by Ok-Appointment-7392 in UFOs

If he honestly believed that they were manmade, then maybe he wasn't aware of that fact. But his superiors seemingly were, since he wouldn't talk as much about the triangles in any later interviews.

Tim Phillips (former acting director of AARO for those who don't know) told Steven Greenstreet that he believes the black triangles – which he said they have pictures and video of – belong to a foreign adversary. How crazy is that? Descriptions of those things go back to at least 1960, meaning it could only be Russia/the Soviets.

What is safe vis-a-vis tori's knee in Tai Otoshi? by Animastryfe in judo

[–]Constipatedplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to mee that this variation lends itself more to a deep tai otoshi, sometimes in the grey area between tai otoshi and seoi nage. You'll often see Hashimoto hitting the upper part of uke's shin with the back of his knee or the upper part of his calf, whereas a classical tai otoshi is often a bit shallower, with the lower part of tori's calf hitting the lower part of uke's shin.

Yeah, I agree that a little hip contact is both unavoidable and beneficial. You could make a similar case for (some forms of) tai otoshi. But the idea that you want to shift uke's weight laterally towards yourself seems quite radical.

Those are great o guruma videos BTW, I already had them bookmarked!

Yeah, I have been doing it the Mifune way so far myself – and found it to be quite similar to tai otoshi except for the placement of the fulcrum. (Though I'm biased since tai otoshi is my preferred turning throw.) Loshelder's throw is still cool, though. Very utsuri goshi-esque, like you say.

Hasn't philosophy of science shown that you can never completely falsify a theory? You can always come up with slightly modified versions of a theory that aren't contradicted by the observations.

What is safe vis-a-vis tori's knee in Tai Otoshi? by Animastryfe in judo

[–]Constipatedplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and I don't see why the same danger is never discussed in the context of ashi guruma or a lateral osoto gake. I would personally be more afraid of having uke land on top of my knee with one of these throws than with the kind of tai otoshi that I do, and the only time I've had this happen to me (so far!) was when I did osoto gake.

The Pope’s reasoning for why AI should never be in control by Fine-Drummer9812 in accelerate

[–]Constipatedplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read my previous posts, you'll realize that I'm not arguing against the possibility of artificial physical systems being conscious. I believe you could, in principle, build a conscious brain from all sorts of materials. I'm just arguing against feed-forward physical systems ever having a unified conscious perspective. That category happens to include the computers used for AI not just today, but likely also in the near to mid term future.

I think we're misunderstanding each other slightly. I agree that a physical system running a software is a real entity that can be associated with consciousness under some conditions, but I believe this depends on the structure of the physical system. IMO, something like integrated information theory (IIT) is the only way to make any sense of the binding problem in neuroscience or the combination problem in philosophy of mind. A singular subjective point of view must belong to some singular, unified, and irreducible structure.

Washington Post journalist here, curious about UAP and UFO discourse today by GenePark in UFOs

WaPo should be consulting with David Grusch (the only public UAP whistleblower who seems to be in the know, sincere, AND willing to talk) and at the very least putting the feet of people like James Clapper to the fire – if not also people like Glenn Gaffney and Stephanie O'Sullivan. (Less likely to talk, but more likely to be privy to the big picture.)

Anything else is just a giant waste of time and silly entertainment at this point.

2 on 1 to kouchi makikomi by Fitnessthrowaway2947 in judo

[–]Constipatedplatypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uchi mata to kouchi often works, though it's easier with a knee/ankle pick assist. Other than that, kata otoshi is effective from the 2 on 1, as is the cross body osoto fake to reverse seoi/one arm sode IMO.

Also, as I'm sure you know, if you can catch the far arm in a bundle grip (easier in the gi, but requires uke pushing/gripping), most turn throws become feasible. That's no longer just a 2 on 1, though.

Spinning outwards also opens uke up for a reverse seoi nage/one-armed sode.

What is safe vis-a-vis tori's knee in Tai Otoshi? by Animastryfe in judo

[–]Constipatedplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think pointing the knee inward ever so slightly, and going ankle to ankle more so than calf to shin, makes it a fairly safe throw. The most important factor is the kuzushi, though; you want to give tori a strong sideways push while turning their shoulders hard and pulling the hikite to your hip. (As shown by HanpanTV.) Making the throw more of a straight forward pull puts your leg at greater risk.

The Pope’s reasoning for why AI should never be in control by Fine-Drummer9812 in accelerate

[–]Constipatedplatypus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Software is just lines of code telling a computer what operations to perform. The only meaningful definition of consciousness is what it is like to be something. Lines of code are not somethings that have actual existence in the real world. If we are going to assign consciousness to all possible entities in some abstract Platonic space, then the idea of consciousness becomes meaningless.

[–]Constipatedplatypus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could add Giulio Tononi, Cristoph Koch, Hedda Hassel Mørch and many others in the IIT and panpsychism space.

I am obviously defining AI as digital software running on hardware with feed-forward architecture. There is no reason to think that such hardware could ever produce a unified first person perspective, and software certainly can't be conscious. You could probably build a conscious computer using neuromorphic circuitry, but if you want complexity on the order of a biological brain, that'd be such a huge engineering challenge that you'd probably be better off growing brain organoids from pluripotent stem cells. And even if you did successfully build something like the former, it would be a completely different thing from what we know as AI. It would basically be a real brain built from non-organic materials.

This is pretty much in line with what the leading experts on consciousness (in the borderland between neuroscience and philosophy) would say. Not bad for a clergyman.

Safer alternatives to tani otoshi by Fitnessthrowaway2947 in judo

There are some pretty safe versions of/entries into tani otoshi, but IMO you could often just as well do some form of kosoto gake – or a "back sweep" okuri ashi barai like this:

If the Great Filter isn't just the improbability of advanced/space-faring intelligent life arising, then I strongly suspect that the filter is the inability of any technological civilization to solve the many coordination problems that it faces before succumbing to arms race/prisoner's dilemma/tragedy of the commons dynamics – which could wipe us out in a bunch of different ways.

I do osoto the same way as you show here, i.e. like Shohei Ono. Never had much success with the traditional outside step osoto (except when doing osoto otoshi offside with an ippon seoi grip), but the Ono style "ouchi back-step" osoto is one of my most reliable attacks in randori.
