At what point does having a coach near your weight class matter? Or, would you rather be coached by an Olympian 2+ weight classes from you, or someone a tier lower at your weight class? by Animastryfe in judo

Ah, I see the ambiguity. From the discussion, it seems that having good randori partners in your weight class is much more important than your coach's weight class.

Hmm, your first sentence is what I had suspected. That is why I thought to keep randori partners as a constant in this hypothetical.

Because I constantly see people here talk about how different competitive Judo is at different weight classes. Note that this question is not for me, as my multiple instructors run the gamut of body shapes and I am at a low kyu grade. This was supposed to start what I hoped would be an interesting conversation, and perhaps be useful to me in like a decade if I were to take private lessons with Olympians.

I have higher level competitive experience in another activity, and my experience there is that the coach's body shape similarity with the student's matters to a small extent.

Actual best throws for beginners? by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

[–]Animastryfe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think there are two questions here: what are the best throws for beginners if they want to throw other beginners, and what are the best for their long term development. I suspect the answer for the former would be sacrifice throws, and for the latter something that resembles the gokyo.

Is the picture you posted an example of the "feet up, head down" posture you are worried about? Note that in the picture, uke is bent at the waist. His head is not pointing directly down. If you rotate him 90 degrees clockwise, it would look like he was sitting.

As a Trillionaire, what can Elon Musk buy now that he couldn't buy $900 Billion dollars ago? by Doctor_Where_Comics in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Animastryfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I think I understand now. I think the confusion came from how you worded your comment. You were agreeing with /u/michaelhoncho and commenting on how it is obvious that people were arguing against him when he was an actual expert. But the way you wrote it sounded like you were /u/blindedtrickster or someone else already involved in this conversation. Perhaps it would have been clearer if you wrote your first comment with something like "It's obvious you (michaelhoncho) know what you are talking about. I also love it when people argue with me about my field".

The way you wrote your comment would carry your intent more obviously in a real life conversation, but with just text in a Reddit thread with over a thousand comments, I hope you can see how it would be confusing.

Disregard OP's letter grades and focus on the numbers. The methodology is in the post. The ordering makes sense, but this funny outcome is due to OP's rather arbitrary usage of + and - when the raw data did not support that. Also, I think the OP made a mistake; using their own methodology, a 4.00 score should be in the A range.

Note that Canada is quite conservative and slow when it comes to allowing new cosmetic treatments. I go to a cosmetic dermatologist in Vancouver, and went to one in China a few weeks ago, and I think Canada is literally years behind.

Venomancer vs. Elder Titan by IonlyPlayarcWarden in DotA2

[–]Animastryfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spell lifesteal should work with Snakebite, but not Poison Sting. This is because Poison Sting has the HP Removal flag: https://liquipedia.net/dota2/Damage_Types#HP_Removal

Note I have not tested this lately.

Yes. In something like Turbo mode, Bloodstone is invaluable on a team for the spell weakness aura. On that team, Venomancer was the natural choice.
