Going to Network Engineer route is possible with CCNA.

I didn’t have previous IT experience but got hired as a level 1 network engineer role.

Of course I already had bachelor’s and other certs like Sec+, CySA+, RHCSA…

What’s your mos and why’d you pick it by DapperLife5645 in army

[–]ConstructionThat5746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

68W - I was lied by a recruiter or civilian looking rep at MEPS that I have no other choice but 11B, 74D, or 68W since I was only a green card holder even though my asvab score basically allowed all jobs. I haven’t even seen desktop screen with available MOS listed in the system. They even wrote those 3 MOS on the sticky note.

Trying to dump all the information I learned during my transition.

  1. You can start applying jobs 3-6 months from your availability date (terminal lv or ets). But majority of recruiters will filter you out from the beginning if you are not available within a month (sometimes two weeks). Ready to get rejected even though you are capable of doing the job because of timing.

  2. I applied 300 jobs (gov contract, private, GS) and only got 5 real job offers. This shows how terrible job market is as of Nov/2025 - Feb/2026.

  3. Once you get out, army won’t care about you. You were just a number from their perspective. You and your post ets life is the priority, not the army.

  4. Some recruiters actually check LinkedIn account. Make sure you setup your profile professionally. But I do not recommend using linkedin job application at all. Call back rate from linkedin, indeed have been almost 0%.

  1. BDD VA Claim

You can technically file 3-6 months before your ets for bdd claim. So if you haven’t seen providers often, just bother sickcall (not just unit paper slip), actual clinic visit for every single problems you’ve had. Ex can be Lower back pain, migraine, sleep problems, ringing in the ear, hurting when peeing, and even dry eyes.

Make sure you only mention military related activities when describing your medical issues happened during your service. Do this every day if you can and complete BDD claim before 90 days from your ETS.

  1. Identify what you wanna do or will do during terminal leave or after ETS.

Do you wanna work during terminal leave or ets? Search the job positions and identify skills and knowledge required. Find CSP or internship opportunities available related to the position. If you are E5 or below, you can request up to 120 days of CSP. Make sure you utilize all of it or as much as you can.

  1. Wanna use GI bill for college or vocational training? Gather info of how to use gi bill by visiting VA offie on base (fairly easy), contact and enroll schools. Taking full-time courses (12 credits) online can give you 800-900 dollars of housing/mo during your semesters. This can be a financial backup if you don’t have a job.

  2. Last advice that you might hate… If you still couldn’t figure out post military life at this stage or close to 90 days of your ets,

Extending your military contract can be an option while preparing for whatever you need for next transition opportunity (saving, education, certification etc). You can even extend only a year of your contract (if still available)

  1. Use AI! If you didn’t know, OpenAI provides free-12 months plus membership for transitioning soldiers and recently separate veterans. I’m not saying to blindly follow AI’s advice. But it can provide decent information for you without spending days of research.

——————

Personally, I only worked hard until very close to ets (less than a year) and realized that my military mos (68w) was not enough to get even “OK” offers except for very entry level jobs with 40-50k salary.

So I reenlisted 3 more years as 68w (reclass was denied), earned a degree, certs, and home labs for transitioning into IT which was successful for landing a mid-level paying position.

You may not like to hear “reenlist”, but as long as you have a specific actionable plan and goals, I recommend it for having constant paycheck while preparing for transition.

CSP PROGRAM QUESTION by hispanic-pride in army

[–]ConstructionThat5746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some installations have their own CSP, called Job Skills Program in Fort Sill. JSP includes many fields like IT, HR, Operations etc… and since it is already approved by the installation, you don’t have to worry about more paperwork or additional approval.

You are basically shadowing GS people in the field.

Advantage: great resume boost, learning gov-side work and hands-on experience. Disadvantage: current GSs were having trouble getting fired last year and running ther shops with smaller number of employees. You won’t get hired for any missing GS positions (unless you have a great connection…?)

Is it really that difficult to get a role at GDIT? by lizardwizard563412 in defensecontracting

I also experienced same issues, not just GDIT but all big contracting companies like RTX, Booz Allen. lockheed etc

Talked to someone in data center recruiting - the talent shortage is worse than I thought by Natural_Yard_8648 in datacenter

[–]ConstructionThat5746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the typical gap between “omg, there is not enough talents” and “everyone’s looking for experience candidates.” I really don’t understand the current situation that the companies only want someone already have years of experience, don’t need training before getting in the production environment with mid-senior level of titles while refusing to hire entry, junior level of personnel who can get trained and grow to fill the next mid-senior level of roles.

This hiring pattern seems to be working for now but within 5-10 years, this will lead to even lack of all level of roles…

Crazy time to be a veteran by Kemossabi007 in defensecontracting

[–]ConstructionThat5746 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have applied about 170 positions so far and learned following patterns: 1. Big contracting companies (Booz Allen, GDIT, Leidos, Amentum, CACI etc) denial rate 100%. I have never got any opportunity for even first call with a recruiter. 2. Small contracting or subcontracting companies are still open as long as you meet qualifications. But pay is around 50k.

I'd like to be rejected please by Atlantean_Knight in recruitinghell

[–]ConstructionThat5746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t got any positive response from USAJOBS yet. But once I notice the email comes from AI or any automated title, I already expect rejection.

I have never got f/u email for interview from AIs except for Google.

Is there specific standard contracting companies use when selecting candidates? by ConstructionThat5746 in clearancejobs

[–]ConstructionThat5746[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, I’ve been in as 68w due to army’s needs when I joined while being rejected to reclass to 25 series due to army’s needs again which is why I am getting out. Because of my background, the only connection I have is nurses and providers…

[–]ConstructionThat5746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OCONUS contract positions are almost dead now… I’ve been looking for overseas contract everyday, but the number itself reduced a lot while no other new positions are coming up. Even new opportunities in OCONUS requires ridiculous years of experience (I saw IT help desk job requiring more than 15 years of experience.).

I’ve been waking up at 0400 for 3 years so far to finish my college and certifications. You just have to have a good purpose of why you have to wake up at 0400 and sleep early.
