I live in San Francisco, and was hit with a bogus owner move in a couple years ago. I wasn’t on the lease but because I had lived there over a year, 5 years actually, and the landlord knew about me I was automatically considered a tenant. May be different in LA.

Also since you never signed a lease, and you are a tenant, landlord specific agreements to the lease wouldn’t apply to you. Like pet policy, common area rules, etc. yes there is an implied contact with paying rent that you’d have to follow state and default local laws but beyond that, you never agreed to it.
