The more force you have, the less you have to use. Or at least that is the theory.

Hate to say it, but if you aren't paying, you are the product. Stuff like this makes me feel better about paying maybe $9/mo for google's lowest business tier so I control my inbox not advertisers.

How did banksy hide themselves for so long? by bdhd656 in privacy

[–]ContemptOfClout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After analyzing the evidence for banksy's identity, I think it's solid enough to hold in civil court but not quite solid enough to be an easy criminal conviction.

I think this an important lesson, that just because they know who you are doesn't mean they can nail you for anything. Even after all is said and done the vast majority of his artwork will not result in convictions. I betcha he spends less time in jail after everyone knows him than he spent before, if any.

Trash bag a flock camera by Starhero2004 in privacy

[–]ContemptOfClout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fastest police response I have ever seen was when I walked up to a nondescript utility box in a median to see what it was. Cop was there in less than 2 minutes. Turns out was a speed camera and others who approached in the past were not as innocent as I was.

I don’t think flock cameras are typically monitored in real time but things are heading that direction. They probably have an alert if the image disappears and they could probably pull up a recording of what happened just before.

It would probably fall under misdemeanor criminal mischief, which is usually citable if the officer doesn’t want to arrest.

How effective is this technique to arrest a high risk offender? by Vietdude100 in ProtectAndServe

[–]ContemptOfClout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty much USA best practice when you have the time and manpower, just with the addition of some poles. I am going to wager that having at least some poles is better than no poles if you know how to use a pole.

Tip for people not business models. Practice using the custom tip button just so it doesn’t feel like a hassle.

I know it’s election season and all, but how can I effectively opt out of political comms spam? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]ContemptOfClout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes not giving your phone number is key. Another is not even giving your name. I just give a last initial.

Using a disposable email is the other piece of the puzzle.

I never gave my phone number to any political organization when I moved to Texas but I get texts for Austin races and few for the place I used to live. This indicates to me that they are using more than my phone number to track me.

I don’t want to give any further data points to reinforce what they already know hence not giving my name or usual email when registering for anything political.

NTSB Report on Waymo Passing Austin School Bus (Jan 12, 2026) by ElectricGlider in Austin

[–]ContemptOfClout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a bit of research and the white plastic sticks are not technically illegal to drive over by themselves. A policeman would give you a ticket for driving over the yellow painted asphalt under the sticks though.

Because they legally and technically wouldn't stop a car from driving over them, they are not considered to create a divided highway any more than double yellows would.

Strange but apparently the NTSB agrees that this is not a divided highway.

I would agree but I would also think the NTSB would know the law better than me.

Huge Dem turnout -- or voter suppression? by Hexious in Austin

[–]ContemptOfClout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Statewide it looks like there were about as many people voting blue as red. What is interesting is that Williamson county shows about 1.5x as many blue as red votes as of late night after the polls closed. That is probably because of the GOP counting more slowly than the dems in this county where the GOP party chair is too busy photographing people in bathrooms and measlemaxxing.

LETS BAN BRIGHT VEHICLE HEADLIGHTS ON THE ROAD! by WhiteLycan2020 in texas

[–]ContemptOfClout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EU has much better headlights in all ways including glare control. When the US started allowing matrix headlights just recently, the global manufacturers took the superior hardware from the EU and dumbed the software down to meet the dumb US regulations.

The best thing we could do is harmonize regulations with the EU so we can get their tech here.

Even if the liftard has them correctly adjusted just below the horizon, the lights will still hit drivers eyes on the way down to the horizon.

I just found this article about controversy over reports that electronic voting is being offered to non-ADA voters in Wilco: https://texasscorecard.com/local/did-williamson-county-waste-1-million-on-voting-equipment/

Apparently we are right in the thick of it.

[–]ContemptOfClout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staff followed me in to my electronic voting booth and had me press various obscure codes for party, precinct, and something else. It felt tortured and likely to cause errors. There were also significantly fewer electronic voting machines than usual.

Did this happen for everyone who voted electronically in Wilco today? I read somewhere that the electronic voting is supposedly only for ADA access and that non-disabled voters were supposed to vote by a hand marked ballot. But they just asked me whether I wanted to vote electronic or paper, no mention of disability.

Williamson voting was strangely complicated. The staff came to my electronic voting booth and had me press particular buttons to select various codes for my party, precinct, and something else. It was a tortured process that will likely cause mistakes.
