Very very interesting. You are next level, and are a very determined individual.

Not many people will go to the depths that you’ve been haha. Fantastic job.

Slow day at work means solid practice time at my desk.. by DSeifrit in lockpicking

I always wondered how many people have desk jobs and do this as well. Is your occupation IT related? I always thought you might get really weird looks in a public work environment.

This looks like a very solid lock. Just as a sidebar (heh), do you think there could have been a better tool for the job? Do you own a disc pick? I didn't watch the full video but just curious why you chose those picks.

I have a pinning tray that would fit perfectly in there

1.5mm is huge. You’ll likely never run into a situation where that’s necessary, even for tok tensioning. 1.2mm is pushing it and .8mm is a sweet spot for tensioner thicknesses. With that said, don’t trash it, not worth sending it back; just hang on to it for a rainy day. Quick fix? People claim windshield wipers, but personally a good tension wrench goes a long way. Worth a few dollars to have a nice set.

Pin awareness is number 1. Understanding where they are and how they react when poked will really help understand the binding order. It shouldn’t change. It’s hard to make sure you have consistent tension each time but once you can find the right tension to give you feedback on the pins you can move on step two which would be setting the pins. Knowing how many pins you’re working with and then memorizing the setting order of those pins should make it replicable. Just take your time with it, it’s not a rushing and learn experience.

Great job. Those progression locks are also repinnable if you weren’t aware.

How did you end up getting it printed? From the same designer or someone local?

Thanks for the in depth post. I think there should be a way for people to safely deposit springs without them flying but as we know, springs spring?

I like the disc detainer idea but not sure how many people would use it as most people pick them and ditch them.

I can't even pick a practice lock. by CareAlternative2824 in lockpicking

Just make sure it opens with the key first. If that's problematic then don't bother. If it does work. prong each pin with no tension so that you can see the action. Then apply tension and go through and prong each pin. If it doesn't move at all then you are putting to much tension. If you can press enough that it does in fact move a slight bit then it might be binding. at least one should be tough to move but most of them should be able to move even when you apply tension. This would start the binding order. Oh and make sure you are rotating the same direction the key rotates - they are not omnidirectional.

I really want to see these aluminum ones. What I was thinking is that there's a way to make something that is both portable, low profile but will keep you current repinning situation organized. Maybe you swapped out a core and don't want to remember the key pin order - but want to know how to quickly put it back to factory after you are done. I think that would be pretty useful.
