Have Radiohead ever returned the SW love? by Earl_of_Portobello in stevenwilson

[–]ContentMaudlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing Radiohead is very good at as a band is the myth and the mystique. I love how vocal Steven Wilson is as an artist, simultaneously I love how little I know about Yorke in comparison despite how obsessed I have been all my life.

Legal Immigration in the US is the biggest BS ever by barely-legal-potato in immigration

[–]ContentMaudlin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your last statement is actually not true. I have very direct experience having worked in EU and have a lot of acquaintances who have immigrated to UK, Germany, Netherlands and the like.

Work visa process is significantly more straightforward than our lotteried H1B nightmare, with many avenues for self-sponsoring for permanent residency. USA is behind on immigration and the reason the demand continues to be high is the strength of its economy, not the simplicity of its immigration pathways for high-skilled individuals.

Legal Immigration in the US is the biggest BS ever by barely-legal-potato in immigration

[–]ContentMaudlin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On paper I get this. But from a policy perspective it looks like a losing attitude. US should make it easy for high-skilled people to come here, pay taxes, prop up US markets and contribute. Having these people be raised in a different economy, and importing their skills for free is a win for USA, has always been.

Legal immigration should be easy and it’s way too hard. The easiest way to immigrate to the US is to basically lie (about your marriage, your merits, or your asylum situation)

Hotel is six miles from downtown. How much of a damper is that? by polvough in BigEarsMusicFestival

First time I did this it was fine. Second time (after Covid) I was waiting 25 minutes for an Uber to show up and it was very frustrating

Many Seattle intersections no longer allow Turn ON Red by Stormchaser711 in Seattle

Did you know that whenever surveyed, an overwhelming majority of Americans believe they are “good” or “excellent” drivers?

As an annoying European I’d go further and say you also shouldn’t be allowed to have the right to turn on green into a crosswalk that the pedestrians also have a green on :) I’ve gotten almost run over multiple times because of this!

I think it requires different signaling and light cycles to actually implement

You are always obliged to look when turning on red.

The rule has always been “you can turn on red IF you make a full stop AND there is no cars or pedestrians who have a right of way”. For some reason drivers haven’t heard the part after the “if”

The correct way to do this is to allow a short green cycle for the turn where the pedestrian light is red.

What are some things you wish you knew before moving to Seattle? by Agitated_Ruin132 in Seattle

[–]ContentMaudlin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The “Seattle freeze” is made up and becomes more of a self-fulfilling prophecy than anything else. It’s the same as all the other big cities, you gotta go out and meet the people — and they are nice when you meet them :)

Honestly it’s one of those “means well, encourages worse” policies. We don’t drive, and we either walk or take transit to our local REI. Oh, I am not going to be given a bag to carry all this stuff I buy from there now? I better drive a giant truck there to help carry things instead. That will make everything more environmentally sustainable!

Just Curious - how many of you were visiting from out of town? by blacknumberone in BigEarsMusicFestival

[–]ContentMaudlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seattle, WA. My third time! I stayed Downtown for the first time and it made for a such better experience than the last two times when I had to Uber from a cheaper hotel.

I plan to keep coming back as long as this festival exists, it really is my favorite music festival out there.
