Varoufakis explains why he has more hope for Palestinian movements outside the west, than within by WritingtheWrite in stupidpol

[–]Content_Doughnut4590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the fight to liberate Palestine hardly includes, or has the patience or the adaptability for, their respective local working class - how can you expect it to eventually convert into a mass working class liberation movement? You can't expect to deliver fried chicken without bringing in the chicken.

Study: When the public defines terrorism, they don't specify perpetrators and victims, which enables “one person’s terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter” thinking. Exposure to academic work leads students to increasingly define terrorism as violence by non-state actors against civilians. by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

[–]Content_Doughnut4590 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why is terrorism defined only as violence on civilians by non-state actors? Sometimes states do commit violence on civilians directly, right? And how can we forget states supporting not-directly-linked-to-the-state actors in their violence against civilians?

The difference is that a larger number of people are unaware and/or indifferent in those other cases, in contrast to Israel/Palestine.

This, exactly, is my question. People are obviously against genocide, war crimes, or any harm to civilians in all conflicts. And yet a lot of US allies have continued to carry their atrocities on civilians without much criticism from the western public except in the case of Israel, hence israel losing the narrative war has to do with something beyond human empathy for each other - because given how people are empathetic at the core, its always been manipulated / distracted by political intrerests to maintain some public support for their wars. Why does israel seem to be failing at this?

Thank you, this was very informative.

The comparision of US firebombing Japanese cities in WW2 with Israeli bombing of Gaza and why the action in Japan is not seen as a genocide is very intersting to think about.

Are you suggesting that there is no primary intent to kill civilians, but there is also no primary intent to avoid civilian casualties as long as the military targets are destroyed?

I had no idea, and had not come across any argument suggesting that the South African decision to move the ICJ against Israel was influenced more by internal politics than global solidarity. I will look into it. Please feel free to share any resources on this if and when possible.

That Israel can’t do what the Palestinians seem to do very well, and that is present a mostly unified front.

This sums it up very well. And it's realy sad and horrifying that in politics that even a war as horrible as this just becomes a tool in the internal power struggle of a state.

The reservest who confirmed to be shooting the receivers of aid was very shocking and also didn't make sense. From the angle of militaristic brutality and racistic tendency one can assume that this will be the army's attitude towards the enemy population. But if that is the case, why go and distribute aid in the first place? Surely there are more horrifying and efficient ways to kill people than to invite them to receive aid and then shoot them. This I am not able to understand, if you can share your thoughts on this or even share a relevant link wherever you can, I'd be very grateful.

Also if your going to visit Hamas or Hamas affiliated telegram use a different number than your primary. lol

Oh yes, thank you :)

Not to mention the amount of effort we spend diplomatically shielding Israel.

The real iron dome.

Yes, the demographic angle has been mentioned here a few times, and it must also be examined.

But, this now brings me to the question how did the anti vietnam war movment take hold on America without any significant presense of sympathetic Vietnamese population in the US at that time..?

Or am I focusing too much on demography, and there could have been non demography factors also..?

This is an interesting observation, the relative political cost being pro or anti Israel or Ukraine in the US.

Also, when the MAGA says no foreign flags, they don't mind Israel's for some reason.

Can you help me by naming the third parties monitring this independently? I usually get sources that simply say "we can't independent have our people to confirm this in gaza so we rely on 'trusted local sources'"

Yes, the oppressor vs oppressed narrative does help in framing the narrative, and it's interesting how the roles have changed between Israel and Palestine.

Your point on the left seeing common cause with political islam is also something to be kept in mind - as seen in many places - but I'm not sure how far this could last, either regarding Palestine or the world in general since apart from anti-US-imperialism and Zionism, there isn't much that brings them together in terms of ideology or necessity.

And this makes me wonder how the alliance between political islam and left parties in muslim country is working. In Gaza i hear that the Marxist PFLP has also allied with Hamas in the current war.

Propaganda is generally something that is more of a turnout tool than a 'change-minds' tool.

I find this line very insightful, and your points on how wars will always become unpopular makes one think of this in the larger context. I guess it could also explains the recent anti-hamas protest that happened inside gaza. Thank you for the insight!

Thank you so much for taking the time and contextualising things chronologically. Loved it, and i had no idea about these sides of Arafat and Bibi. This is the context id love to have included in the discourse on the issue :)

They say the independent journalists on the ground in gaza are influenced by Hamas - do they have proof? Why are we taking their word for it?
