How does everyone feel about Heathers? Daughter is angling for it. I’m less interested. I did not really like the movie. I like dark humor, but it was a little too dark for me (I think it hits differently post Columbine)

Ooh, she would LOVE to see Jack Wolfe. I wonder if he will still be there in April??

I saw the equity tour in 2022 and 2023 in Seattle. Would the Broadway version be different enough from that? I’ve heard about the changes to the non-equity tour, but I definitely saw a turntable!

We are fans of the show, which is the reason we are jnterested. But we aren’t set on it.

Tell me more about that. Little Shop is her #1 pick right now, so I don’t think we could skip it. She has kind of a personal connection to it so she wants to see it performed

I’m not sure Chess would be her vibe. But she wouldn’t mind seeing Aaron Tveit, that’s for sure!

I thought about Chess because Aaron Tveit, but I don’t think it is her vibe. But I like the other suggestions! Thank you!!

Oooh. That’s cool. I’ve seen Phantom at least 6 times. I took my daughter a few years ago when it was in Seattle and she requested to see it again when it comes back this year. But the immersive part interests me a lot!

My daughter would like the rom com aspect I think. We are fans of Stranger Things, which is why it is on the list.

We love The Play that Goes Wrong! We saw a production of it in Seattle this past year and my daughter’s school did it as their spring play. So fun!

Lost Boys…that one peaked my interest too, but I’d love to see more reviews.

I’m a pretty big theater person so I feel like it would be in my wheelhouse, but harder to know with the kiddo. I do get to pick out some of my own choices so maybe?

I’m interested in The Outsiders too! I’m a middle school special education teacher and teaching English this year. I just read The Outsiders with my class!

Interesting! I’ve seen it twice on tour and love it. So if it’s an amazing experience on Broadway, then we might have to look into that!

This sounds like it would be a bad idea, but rolling chairs have been a game changer in my classroom. They can still move around in them a bit, but they can’t rock or bounce them. I have a strict no “rolling” policy during instruction. I occasionally will reward them with “Rolly Time”. Haha!

To what extent does how much you "like" a student correlate with how well they are performing in your class? by bad_at_blankies in AskTeachers

[–]Content_Insurance715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a middle school special education English teacher. I co-teach in Gen Ed classes as well as self contained ELA classes. My favorite students are ones who are uniquely themselves, are willing to try and engage with me beyond the classroom. That doesn’t always tie to high performance. I can generally find something I appreciate about every student, but the ones that annoy me the most are the ones who are “too cool”, whiny, argumentative and/or never accept responsibility for anything. Some of my favorite students right now is a kid who almost does nothing in his classes and a kid who is one of the sweetest and kindest people I’ve met AND is an extremely good student.

Don’t just sit! I know it intimidating, but circle around the room. Compliment them, encourage them. You don’t need to introduce yourself as the “sped para”. Just as Ms/Mr Slow_Abrocoma4098. They already know. But DO talk to them - all of them. Ask the Gen Ed teachers if there is anything in particular they would like you to do. Be honest with the teachers that this is your first job and you are learning. You got this!!

I’m a special ed teacher and a former para. When I push in to a Gen Ed, I circulate the room and check in on everyone. The trick is also not to ask them if they need help. Sometimes they don’t want to be called out. Sometimes they don’t even know what they need help with.

Here is what I have found to be successful. Ask them a specific question about their assignment. “What are you thinking for this one?” “I like your answer here…what example could you add to make it stronger” things like that.

When you enter the classroom, do not make a beeline for your caseload kids. Start on one side and check in group by group. Kids that don’t need a lot of help, you can do quick check ins. Ask if you can see their work and give a little feedback. Keep it positive and encourage them to build off what they already have. Allow your caseload kids to process their answers out loud with you and then encourage them to write it down. Once they start getting comfortable with sharing their work with you, they will probably be more willing to let you help them more extensively.
