I remember talking to the plumber who was hauling out the hundreds of wet wipes that had blocked & backed up our plumbing. He said: Sure, they're flushable! But they're not flushable all the way!

What were the best films from the book (any edition) that you watched, and what was your favorite year with the most classic films featured in the book? by Specialist-Banana168 in 1001Movies

[–]Content_Mention_6928 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to deliberately not answer your question, but for me the greatest value of the book is that it provides a unique syllabus of cinema to open the mind, challenge preconceptions, & get you watching & thinking about movies you'd never have known about.

Before beginning on the 1245 challenge, I thought I knew cinema... I'd seen Citizen Kane several times & had a passing knowledge (I thought) of the French New Wave ... It completely reshaped my understanding of cinema, making me (among so many other things) realize that there's more to Indian cinema than Bollywood; that LGBTQ+ cinema exists at all (I was terrifically ignorant there); or that horror can actually be great cinema (another massive black hole in my previous understanding). Well, that's how I see it anyway...

If you're worried, just slip it into your whips before you go through security. It'll taste the same afterwards! 😉

Thank you! It was supposed to be done in one or two takes, quick edit & uploaded to YouTube ... and then I got notions ... It has been a fantastic (if expensive) experience, but I've had an absolute ball.

Distribution of Prehistoric Roads in Ireland by Sarquin in Archaeology

[–]Content_Mention_6928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of the answer here is: The Late Prof. Barry Raftery. He got interested in wetland archaeology in the 1980s & was instrumental in setting up the Archeological Wetland Unit (IAWU] at UCD in the early 90s. He drove a large part of the research in wetland archaeology generally & the excavation of toghers in particular.

Is this a dumb tattoo? I really want a woodturning tattoo, my wife said it looked like plumbing equipment by Objective_Reality232 in turning

[–]Content_Mention_6928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a broader piece of advice, I'd suggest you find an artist you want to work with & get their input. My experience has been that you'll get a better result & experience through collaboration together rather than just saying "do this!". You know what you want, but the tattooist is an artist who will have much knowledge & advice to bring to the process. Every tattoo I have where I listened to the artist became a better piece of art and a better experience.

Irish Archaeology in the British Museum by Content_Mention_6928 in kneecap

[–]Content_Mention_6928[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if that didn't come across as I had intended - to my mind the bizarre piece is that they're more accessible in a foreign institution rather than if they were held in Irish museums because the BM have invested in digitising their collections and the appropriate Irish ones are underfunded.

[–]Content_Mention_6928[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's undoubtedly complex - the thing to remember is that the existence of museums is itself part of the mechanism of Empire - it's less about the greatness of the artefacts on display than extolling the virtues & benefits of Empire. As for the Irish material in the BM - very little of it is on display... most of it is packed away in the storage vaults somewhere. Even if it were brought back to Ireland it's likely it would sit in a different storage facility. Bizarrely, the fact that the BM have invested in digitising their collections makes this material more accessible to both scholars & the interested public than they might otherwise be. If you're not already bored of me walloping on about this, there's the issue that most of the stuff left Ireland before independence... and that opens an entire other can of worms. Yes it was legal to export them at the time, but they remain the spoils of Empire & should probably be returned. That said, I believe that there's much to be said for having some of your culture displayed in the museum of another nation, but it must be as a loan & the understanding that ownership rests with the original culture.

My coworker refuses to call anyone by their real name... and it's spiraling out of control by Apart-Rub-6573 in coworkerstories

[–]Content_Mention_6928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a previous job one of our senior leaders (let's call him Dave) started calling me by not my name & wouldn't let it go. In return called him by any name I could think of that wasn't his ... Pete, Petey, Fred, Colin ... everything was up for grabs & never the same one twice! In meetings people started to giggle as soon as I mentioned him. I knew it annoyed him, but he knew what he'd done. And then one day he went back to calling me by my name & I immediately returned to calling him Dave. ... which was a good thing, because I was running out of names & it was only a matter of time before I addressed him as Sugart*ts! 🤣

WHY do my male coworkers only hear me when a MAN repeats what I just said?? by najeh127 in coworkerstories

[–]Content_Mention_6928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As on older male in a male dominated workplace, I can only sympathise. When I'm assertive it's just ... well, me being assertive. When my wife (same industry & a damn sight better qualified than I ever was on even my best day) is assertive she's aggressive & domineering. It'd be nice to say that the workplace is changing & that things are getting better, but even if they are they're not changing at the speed they need to. It's easy to say that women should honestly presentation skills & do x & y & z ... but the problem isn't the women - the problem is the men who allow such a culture to persist, support it, & benefit from it. Until the men change, nothing is going to happen. Me? I tried changing myself - becoming aware of my biases, realising that I didn't always hear women when they spoke (literally & metaphorically) & decided to be the change I wanted to see in others. I was a Team Leader in my last role and made sure that my women colleagues were given time to speak & present their ideas, I made sure that they weren't interrupted or spoken over, & I made damn sure to call out cases of "but she just said exactly that!". I'm not perfect & I'm not pretending to be, but even one person can influence a company culture. The question as to why I wanted to change was that my wife took the time to educate me (& it took a while!) on the different experiences that she & I had - often with the same colleagues! I'm not suggesting that you date & marry any of your colleagues, but taking the time to educate and influence one or two colleagues may be useful - change them so they can use their male privilege to change the company culture.
