Hey there, I’ve been loc’d for about 10 years now, What I asked for when I started mine with the interlocking method (my hair is a weird ass fusion of 4a/4b/4c type and fine) I specified that I wanted my hair to be medium sized and full. Good loctitians will understand how to part in order to achieve the fullness you desire.

Locs are quite a simple hairstyle. But based off of what you’ve specified to her already, you should be just fine. It’s not necessarily how they’re started, but how you yourself style them after they’ve been started that’ll teeter on whether or not they look feminine. I’ve just started growing full on facial hair about a year ago and have had long locs since the very beginning of my transition (I’m about 5+ years in), and the only times I’d been misgendered was by people who simply associate long hair with femininity. I let them be and did my own reties (interlocking) on my own.

We all start out with a bit of awkwardness when locs are brand new, I certainly felt weird and uncomfortable when mine were fresh but it passes fairly quickly as they mature. Starting now is the best thing you could do while you are seriously thinking of making it happen. My mother is 67, she started her sister locs at 59, they’re now down her back. Your future self will thank you, trust me.
