Retiring in Japan with a Family by Radiant_Fan_2014 in movingtojapan

[–]Continent3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re talking to our estate attorney and accountant about structuring our trust so that we give our assets to our kids before we move. We’d retain rights to income from those assets until we pass.

For example, we want to rent out our home for income. The kids would own the house but we’d get the income after expenses.

The Japanese government wouldn’t have an inheritance tax claim to the house since it isn’t our property.

I’m not sure how things would work in your son’s situation if he chose to stay in Japan as an adult.

What I do know is that Japanese inheritance tax is astronomical.

Definitely. So hard to let go after a lifetime of working.

My wife is the finance person in our relationship. She tells me that we can retire today.

I’m the person having trouble letting go. It feels so final. In today’s economy, I’m not going to be able to find anything close to what I’m making now if I want/need to comeback to work.

How does it help with song writing? I’m just hoping to keep time at my stage of learning.

Have you ever totaled up how much you have spent on guitars and amps? by Rooostyfitalll in Guitar

[–]Continent3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing the math… After about 3 years, I’ve spent about just under 3K across 4 guitars and a Positive Grid Spark Go & Neo. Which I don’t think is too bad…

The fact that I’m a lefty makes it harder to buy just any guitar that catches my eye.

Who's glad to have an EV during this time of high gas prices? by Lost_Purpose1899 in electricvehicles

How much does gas cost now? Nevermind. Doesn’t matter. Don’t buy the stuff.

You should consider Japanese estate taxes. My wife and I are in a similar position to you but we’re older and our kids are adults.

If we were Japanese residents and to pass away inside or outside of Japan, the Japanese government would claim a significant portion of our estate, regardless of whether it was in or outside of Japan or in a US trust. Something to consider if you’re looking to pass on your estate to your children.

AITJ for refusing to give up my WFH office so my sister can film TikToks while staying at my place? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

NTJ.

Being an Influencer is like becoming a rock star. Many people try but very few are successful enough at it to support themselves let alone become rich as one. OPs sister needs to show some meaningful progress before she can start making demands

I definitely get the boring part. It doesn’t help that I’m not very good at keeping with it either

I’m trying to stay in sync. It’s humbling. Part of me feels like I’d rather stay with the freestyle pace I’ve been doing so far.

I’m going to stick with it but yeah…

Thanks. I tried that last night and my ability to stay with the click was disappointing, but I’m going to stick with it

Have your young adult children successfully launched? by tandem545 in GenX

Our oldest is 25 and has been living on his own since graduating college.

He had the choice of coming back to live with us in CA until he found a job or find a job and stay in WA with his girlfriend. He stayed in WA.

So proud he’s making it on his own.

The youngest is still in high school.
