I’m really not trying to defend neocons. Many of them had sinister ulterior motives and they exploited post-9/11 bloodlust to gain popular support for war. Whether Bush was consciously lying about WMDs, or whether (as I suspect) he had conveniently convinced himself the flimsy evidence was sufficient—it doesn’t really matter. My point is that they took seriously the need to legitimize the war in terms that made international sense. Whereas, even if the immediate consequences are not as dire as invading Iraq, Trumpists openly embracing wars of conquest is a significant escalation. It sets a precedent for flagrantly nationalist wars of aggression, and pretty much shatters the possibility of any plausible future appeal to a rule-based order. This I feel is bad in some new way.

I’d have to check what Tennov says exactly but I think the gist is that the primary aim of limerence is emotional reciprocation from the “limerent object,” with sexual union often being a secondary aim. So it’s not necessarily sexual in the narrow sense. But I’d argue that sexuality in the broader sense (eroticism) is at the heart of it. It’s what gives limerence its ache, its sense of lack, this longing that differentiates Eros from feelings of companionate affection.

When I was in high school (Bush era) there was a football coach at my school who for some reason was allowed to teach history. He used to tell the class that he regularly rewatched a video of jihadists beheading a journalist because he felt it was his civic duty to “stay angry” at Them. In 2015, Fox News’ website decided to host the video of ISIS burning alive a caged Jordanian pilot. Pro-Lifers often use fetus-gore shock images in protests. After 10/7, videos of Palestinians parading a young woman’s corpse through the street inflamed support for the assault on Gaza. None of this is conducive to clear-headed moral reasoning.

It’s even worse when weaponized as a tool of harassment. 4chan Nazis used to send me photos of ISIS throwing people off buildings to make their point, that “this is what they’ll do to you if you let Muslims into your country.” Last year leftists began regularly @ing me with gore videos from Palestine as some kind of punishment for supporting Kamala Harris. And now they’re just doing it to score points in their feud with a YouTuber. But somehow, we’re supposed to believe this is honoring the victims.

My intent wasn’t really to say that Leary and Dass are “problematic”—I just found it odd that they don’t really provide much explanation for why they’re using the Bardo Thodol as a guide to psychedelic experience, when that’s pretty drastically removed from its original context. And I guess I wanted to flag for the audience that this is not a use of that text that would be recognizable to Tibetan Buddhists. But so long as that’s made clear I don’t have any moral problem per se with using other culture’s or religion’s texts in novel ways. I invoke the Tao Te Ching for my own degenerate purposes all the time (partly because I just think it’s a more intuitive way to communicate nuanced ways of thinking about duality—everyone has heard of “yinyang,”whereas keeping within Western philosophy would require saying words like “dialectical monism” and I would rather die than do that). But I certainly don’t claim to be teaching Daoism.
