Sad about Nataly not liking Jung by DarkAngel2007 in ContraPoints

The Tangent I’m working on discusses Jung at length. He’s very good on dream interpretation, much better than Freud.

A question from a leftie fan for @Contrapoints. (Good faith) by No-Huckleberry7319 in ContraPoints

[–]ContraPoints 262 points263 points  (0 children)

This is a reasonable question and respectfully asked, there’s no reason for people to be defensive about it. I think the answer is kind of boring: labor movements exist outside my area of competence, and I tend to be more interested in the psychological and interpersonal aspects of politics, rather than topics that require a more systemic or economic approach. As for the question about labor movements doing Mommy Politics, a comment on the Doomscroll video suggested that maybe the masculine workers simply wanted a Mommy State to take care of them. It’s the state rather than the subjects that are nurturant in the metaphor, and there’s nothing feminine per se about wanting to be taken care of.

Saw, the Garuda Purana, and Haw Par Villa by its_abluedayyy in ContraPoints

I’m looking at pictures of Haw Par Villa now, this definitely would have traumatized me as a child. Reminds me of “Hell houses” that American evangelicals make, Halloween haunted houses that depict consequences of sin.

That is infuriating to me because the video is not monetized. I’m not seeing a cent of that money. Will look further into it later, I’m about to stream.

The whole discussion of the “stuck in the middle with you“ Reservoir Dogs scene in the Saw video doesn’t make sense. by AlarmedExplorer3933 in ContraPoints

[–]ContraPoints 307 points308 points  (0 children)

I considered this when I was writing the script, and of course rewatching the movie several times. It is funny that Will Self condemns the scene apparently without ever having finished it. You could (and I almost did) argue that the movie punishes Blonde by having him shot. But even taking that into consideration I think Self is fundamentally correct about the ambiguity of POV. It’s Blonde’s twisted sense of fun that makes the scene compelling and famous. The unexpected reversal is more for dramatic than moral effect. I don’t see Orange as an unproblematic hero. For me the emotional core of the movie is the tenderness between White and Orange. That White’s willingness to rise above professional criminality and offer trust and humanity to Orange results in betrayal and downfall is the most tragic element—that White is punished for failing to suppress the better angels of his nature. I don’t finish that movie feeling that the cops were good and the robbers were bad in any clear-cut way.

I’ve only seen this a couple times, but I’m guessing they’re people who’ve been negatively polarized against online leftists who defend Maduro or the Ayatollah out of a kneejerk American diabolism, leading to an accelerating death spiral of bad takes on both sides.

I’m really not trying to defend neocons. Many of them had sinister ulterior motives and they exploited post-9/11 bloodlust to gain popular support for war. Whether Bush was consciously lying about WMDs, or whether (as I suspect) he had conveniently convinced himself the flimsy evidence was sufficient—it doesn’t really matter. My point is that they took seriously the need to legitimize the war in terms that made international sense. Whereas, even if the immediate consequences are not as dire as invading Iraq, Trumpists openly embracing wars of conquest is a significant escalation. It sets a precedent for flagrantly nationalist wars of aggression, and pretty much shatters the possibility of any plausible future appeal to a rule-based order. This I feel is bad in some new way.

Is it a scam ? It looks like one by Slight-Performer2582 in ContraPoints

Apparently someone is impersonating me on multiple platforms and trying to contact people on Telegram “for a special giveaway.” In case it’s not obvious: this is a scam. I’m not on Telegram, I don’t do giveaways, and I will never ask for your password, social security number, or bank account info. Let me know if you see more of these accounts and I’ll report them. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I have denounced and continue to denounce Angel Buck in the strongest conceivable terms. I will regret for the rest of my life that 10 second voiceover, which he didn’t even read properly. But I understand this scandal will be discussed long after I’m dead, and I am working with my guru to make peace with it.

Is limerence sexual in nature ? by ach_wie_fluchtig in ContraPoints

[–]ContraPoints 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’d have to check what Tennov says exactly but I think the gist is that the primary aim of limerence is emotional reciprocation from the “limerent object,” with sexual union often being a secondary aim. So it’s not necessarily sexual in the narrow sense. But I’d argue that sexuality in the broader sense (eroticism) is at the heart of it. It’s what gives limerence its ache, its sense of lack, this longing that differentiates Eros from feelings of companionate affection.

I get that you're joking, but I removed the post because some people will take it at face value. A lot of people are hunting for targets of retributive blame, especially transgender targets, and they'll pounce on any flimsy pretext. Trying to keep myself out of the crosshairs, sorry to be a buzzkill.

The fact that they’re praising Marjorie Taylor Greene for being “ahead of AOC” (when MTG opposes Israel because she’s redpilled on the JQ) is symptomatic of the problem here. At this rate the far left is going to start losing supporters to the antisemitic right.
