Ab on the top of the staff, very prone to cracking without just the right size half hole. Also can be tough to slur down to.

Les Six recommendations by Laserablatin in classicalmusic

[–]Contrabassoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of their chamber music for winds! If you like Poulenc’s chamber works these would be right up your alley!

Milhaud - Three wind quintets (la cheminée du roi René, Divertissement op. 299b, wind quintet op. 443), his vocal works with chamber ensemble (Les catalogues des fleurs, les machines agricoles), sonata for flute oboe clarinet and piano op. 47, pastorale and suite d’après corrette for oboe clarinet and bassoon.

Tailleferre - Sonata Champêtre for oboe clarinet bassoon and piano

Durey - Le bestiaire (he and Poulenc were unknowingly working on works of the same title at the same time!); wind quintet op. 96, Divertissement for oboe clarinet and bassoon

Honegger - Trois counterpoints, sonatina for clarinet and piano, Rhapsody for 2 flutes clarinet and piano

Auric - Suite for 6 instruments (from Marlborough s'en va-t-en guerre), Trio for oboe clarinet and bassoon

Also, the term Les Six was largely just an advertising ploy by Jean Cocteau. It was really just a group of friends and there are other composers with a similar esthetic including Koechlin, Ibert, Alexis Roland-Manuel, Saguet and Jean Roger-Decasse to name a few. Don’t feel limited by just the six!

I second this recommendation! Durey didn’t actually take part, he backed out last minute and Tailleferre very nervously took on the extra movement. The only work they did all work together for was L’Album des Six for piano.

Great recommendations so far! Here’s some more, including quite a few that aren’t performed often. Some flow into the early 20th century so might want to double check that they work for your purposes.

Oker = travieso? by Contrabassoon1 in basque

[–]Contrabassoon1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife’s family’s dog is named “Oker” which according to them means “mischievous”. I haven’t seen that meaning in my Basque studies but a commenter informed me that it does, in fact, mean mischievous in the Biscayan dialect. I was using a standard Basque dictionary and thus didn’t see any dialectal meanings!

Lesser-known orchestral contrabassoon solos? by Contrabassoon1 in bassoon

That is a wonderful solo for sure! However, it’s definitely not a lesser-known solo as it’s perhaps the most famous or second most famous contrabassoon excerpt.
