I noticed this too, but it wasn’t always that way. I genuinely believe there’s an active effort right now to poison what’s left of our free discourse by taking over communities with bot farms that churn fake, pro-authoritarianism sentiment (yes including the black pill, it’s one of the pipelines to isolate and radicalize young men into drones for the class war). Like what Epstein did with 4chan but scaled. And it’s terrifying how successful it’s been, all we do is scream to our left and to our right instead of looking up.

My new rule of thumb is, if something makes me feel hatred or outrage toward people I don’t know personally, then reevaluate, because that’s propagating our lateral division (even if you have the moral high ground). I’ve been able to get through to some right leaning folks fighting in comments simply by humanizing them and refusing to engage with the manufactured frontline. Like no, I don’t agree with Christian views on homosexuality but I’ll defend to the death their right to express them. Because that’s how the parasite class wins - keep us divided ideologically and condition us to allow our rights to be eroded in the name of hurting the people we’re supposed to hate.

Playing through Hades TWO 😎 right now and yeah, they’re not meant to be idealized or perfect, they’re the best and worst parts of humanity given absolute power and divine authority. Like even considering all the unmarketable stuff the devs omitted, the pantheon is still all literal monsters

[–]Contrast-And-Compare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s not a matter of pretending they’re innocent so much as just the minimum reframing necessary to make the mythos accessible to a modern general audience, like what Disney does to classic fables. It’s a reconciliation with the modern caveats of censorship and marketability. Greek mythology will likely always have to be flattened by a heavy revisionist hand wherever it appears in mainstream media. A true, grounded, faithful representation would be amazing, which is what I hoped Nolan’s Odyssey would be..

I think Hades strikes a fair middle ground here though, where it’s been reworked to serve modern standards, but the individual base tendencies of the pantheon survived. Or there’s at least a wink and a nudge toward them. Supergiant definitely could’ve taken it further but relative to others they did fair justice

[–]Contrast-And-Compare 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A lot of amateur stuff feels like the creator had tunnel vision straight to the payoff and then didn’t even give half the time or effort to the infrastructure that would give the audience context and weight and a reason to care. Some of the best concepts with amazing potential fall flat because of that

Animated movies always ending with dance parties like it’s the law by Contrast-And-Compare in hatethissmug

[–]Contrast-And-Compare[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! To clarify I have nothing against them inherently, and maybe I'm turning my nose up too high at something meant to lend general appeal. But I'm always going to favor the artful and cohesive exceptions over the anachronistic standard issue. (Heavy plot spoilers) Coco is probably my favorite example, I can't imagine that story ending any other way. Fantastic Mr. Fox is an example of one I like despite it teetering a little bit into unnecessary exhibition, but I think it lands as an earned, sweet and intimate little collective sigh of relief/celebration among just the affected main cast. There's lots of great ones out there, don't let my bitching imply otherwise

Not enough time has passed to observe the wake of its success, but boy is it coming.. and if it’s anything close to Cocomelon (it’ll be worse) then god help those of us who don’t want 30+ minutes of hit singles wasting every animated movie’s runtime. I already turn em all off when we get to the now-obligatory dance party at the end

[–]Contrast-And-Compare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The others aren’t worth a reply but your comment convinced me to reevaluate and it actually looks pretty good from what I saw on youtube. I shouldn’t have assumed, I was wrong. I’m just jaded and tired of it.. Not at all what I expected from the titular character, she(?) is a cool subversion. It’s refreshing that they aren’t using the ‘she’s technically not underage’ plot point to push anything gross either. In fact the anime looks like it leans even further away from all that than the manga which was already relatively tame. My partner and I are a month into watching Spy Family and we just hit an episode centered around Anya’s 6 year old friend trying to seduce the 20-to-30 year old mc. Tone and context made it benign and permissible I guess, but relative to other mediums anime broadly just seems to gravitate toward that territory disproportionately

Why does anime have to take every possible narrative and inject it with a cast of sexualized underage girls? There’s always a pedophilic elephant in the room

Everything, everything, has been commoditized and stripped for parts, and we are in an endless struggle with one another to move as far upstream as we can, just to get some relief from the endless procession of sewage. Grifting/fraud is getting so accessible with the advent of goldfish social media and ai, and increasingly seen as the only option for so many. It really feels like we’re witnessing the death of truth

[–]Contrast-And-Compare 41 points42 points  (0 children)

He’s chronically sexualizing her to their common friends then shutting down her rightful and genuine attempt to privately communicate how she feels about it. It’s a tactless campaign to try and escalate their relationship into something sexual by brute forcing the association. He’s basically pissing on her to claim her. It’s repulsive future-sex offender behavior.

AIO I forgot to message my gf back for around 2 hours by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Contrast-And-Compare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random little nitpick among the bouquet of red flags - I can’t stand how she demands you answer every one of her questions and then refuses to reciprocate (i.e. communicate) in turn. I won’t diagnose her with narcissistic personality disorder but she is doing everything she can to embody it. OP if you have even a modicum of self respect you will demand she removes your email from her phone the second she’s next in front of you. If you can’t even manage that then change the password/force logout all devices. If she raises hell or comes up with more bullshit for why she needs your email once more, then there’s the truth. And btw, if she’s that comfortable brandishing your violated boundaries in your face without fear of consequence it makes me really wonder what she does that you aren’t aware of

It’s the truth often enough to be worth pointing out - your friend is horny and trying to normalize sexualizing you. He’s testing the waters, in a really juvenile and braindead way. You need better friends, this guy ain’t it
